it's all fan myth and legend.
JNT thought it was tarted up and sold at auction in 1985 or 6, I've visited what he thought was auctioned and it can not be the original Newbery era TARDIS because it's construction is totally different. see another thread http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=8436.0

It would seem that nothing's left of it my friend but a few bits and pieces salvaged by JNT now in my collection. quite sad.

But I'm glad to see there is more love growing for this TARDIS scenery as time passes.

That does look amazing, but it's sad that the actual prop doesn't exist anymore as I'd assumed after reading on here that it was still around albeit in its altered form, which bits are original on this? The windows and door sign? Or are they the original doors? It looks like Toms about to pop out of them!

JNT once told me (I actually asked him in 1997 at his house in Brockley) what actually happened to the old TARDIS police box, I asked him was it skipped like the console (the most part)... he mistook my meaning the TYJ fibreglass ones, because I remember he looked at Gary for reassurance & said Beech has one and the BBC has another, but I pressed him on the wooden Tom Baker box from the 70s, and he did say glibly 'oh we tarted that up years ago and auctioned it for children in need' - so he did honestly 'think' it was the Newbery. But as I say having inspected it and having listened to fellow experienced TB bods like scarf wearer, and Tony's opinions... I agee that the one which JNT referred to isn't actually the box it can't be, it is too different in it's basic construction and measurements. It also has a back and significantly different panels and bevels and depth and is most likely a totally different building.
JNT gave me these windows, you see here so they are BBC production used and I think (I STRESS THINK) I've screen matched a few marks and gluey stains, and placed them in what I thinks their correct orientation. (when I discovered I had them I couldn't sleep I was so excited! I had them in a display upside-down and back to front -can you imagine the energy whizzing round when I saw patterns and recognised shapes!
I also believe some of the windows (especially the yellow pebble glass effect ones) from that Newbery made it into the later Yardley Jones windows as the blue paint marks of the window bars are narrower (too narrow to be the Yardley Jones windows)... the door sign isn't original, but the top signage is. I also have a yale door night latch lock from the actual box, but it has no keys... so I''l probably install that on there too when I next have some time.  The top sign is hand painted on cheap and mouldy hard board wood it's very flimsy and a bit underwhelming compared to the later more sophisticated printed Yardley Jones ones in blue.

Oh Mr Barton Hill, you've made an ageing "Time Lord" (whose body is wearing a bit thin) very happy!

I'm really glad that you have some surviving elements of the Newbery Tardis; I know that these are items which you will treasure and conserve.  

I'm also pleased that things still periodically resurface - I'm thinking of items such as the original Ice Warrior Helmet; this certainly should give one hope for the future.

If people read my history of the TY-J Tardis props or, as they were termed by the BBC, "scenery", (what is the plural of scenery?  ), it was noted that a "Newbery-esque" sign-box was temporarily fitted to the TY-J Tardis in Peter Davison's first season. And - certainly - in Black Orchid, the Newbery Box appeared minus one of its sign-boxes (paradoxically, in its last known public outing - Longleat 1983, the Newbery Tardis was fitted with a TY-J sign-box to replace the "missing" original).

My interest in the Tardis has been rekindled - I hope, Mark, that you won't mind if i get in touch with you to ask a couple of questions?

Whilst it's sad that the box doesn't exist anymore it's fabulous that Time rotor has some original pieces of it in his collection. It's one of my very favourite boxes!

It looks spot on! Good old Prussian Blue! It really is the perfect TARDIS colour i've been using it for my 1/13 models, will try some on my Newbery when i get round to another one

Also try FLANDERS Blue by Craig & Rose for that authentic slightly patchy 'is it light blue ..is it dark blue ?' - 'is is green, grey, or blue hue?' look.

Is the Prussian blue the base colour with the Flanders on top?

Is the Prussian blue paint widely available or is  it something you've had made up?

The prussian blue is Valspar from B&Q (sourced by our very own expert markofrani *he might give you the colour code if you ask him nicely* - he used it on the BBC remount for SHADA as he made the miniature model Newberry TARDIS box which span in space. GENIUS man!
* it's slightly darker and slightly more navy than Flanders blue - which has that 'Armagedon Factor' turquoise look . It is indeed layered over and sometimes the other way around... looks bright in day light and dark at night in house light. very gorgeous colour actually. exciting stuff. So yours could look like this too!

Both are commercially available.
