OMG it's an anagram of 'doctor who' too, I wondered how long it would take for someone to notice that. 

BTW, A lot of people collect antique telephones. I browsed around a bit and found this picture of a "Tele 121" phone, which is similar, but not identical to the one in Doctor Who.

Hmmm, does look like the BBC props department used this one as a guide.

And now I know the phone type (121) I've found quite a few photos.

These phones pop on eBay from time to time, Tom and I have been trying to find it for quite some time...we have come to the realiation that it is indeed a custom phone, though there are plenty of close models to use.

Mainly you need to find one without the dialing ring and add in the knobs. The speaker funnel part will have to be found later too.

Finding this will be fun in itself!

So, just as an update, found this screengrab from 'The Empty Child', and it's different from the picture on the BBC website.  Note the 'mouthpiece' is a completely different shape and design...

Which means they've made at least two, and weren't fussy about making them the same.... as per usual, I guess...

Well, it's obviously the same phone as shown in The Empty Child, and not the BBC photo at the top of the page.

The thing will be trying to work out what they made the receiver out of [it obviously isn't a period phone receiver] and what they used for the microphone speaker, as that doesn't appear to be period either.

I did spot one of these for sale in an antique shop recently, but it was for more than I was willing to spend.

I'd be surprised if the TV prop was made up from scratch - most likely they bought one, and either it had already been modified/repaired, or they had to fix it up a bit (or even a lot!). Possibly twice given the photo differences.
It's also possible that they bought several phones and mixed and matched a bit.
Those bells do look a bit suspect - perhaps they're from a different phone - possibly the mouth piece is also.
Cords often get replaced when they get old.
I can't find any phone with an ear piece quite like that one - odd that they should do something different there, as the ear piece seems to have been remarkably unchanged over telephone history, until the combined handset came along.
But the hook and box look very like originals to my untrained eye.

It's a bit of an enigma isn't it?
