By any chance, is there any B.T. engineers out there that can help with a little problem I have?

I'm installing a phone in my box (when it's built of course!) and I want the lamp to flash as per the original.

Now the way I figure is you connect the mains operated lamp to a relay and two wires of the BT line to the other part of the relay. Question is, which BT wires would I connect and what type of relay would I use?

Oh and I know you aren't supposed to mess with telephone systems, its er. hypothetical ;D

I had a quick look on Google, and found this:
http://www.tkk.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/telephone_ringer.html
I've never tried any of it, though.

I should also mention that many computer modems can detect RING tones if you can do programming. The light on my box is controlled by X10 so I can turn it on and off from the computer.

Cheers Crispin, got fed up of surfing and getting no where! I'll go check that link now.

Oh, and I haven't programmed anything since a BBC model B computer (in BASIC!)

Do you want the light to flash when the phone rings?
If so, I would dismantle a phone alert device and fit it in my lamp like these at www.sarabec.com,   go to Hearing telephones then Telephone ring indicators. Or http://www.beaconlamps.com/beacons/telephone/index.html They just plug in to a phone line (I always look for the easy solution)
The lights are quite bright and you can get some with variable flash (for people sensitive to strobe lighting)
Was the flashing light meant to alert the patrolling officers to ask them to contact the station?

Thanks TG, I'll give that idea some thought too.

When the police station wanted to speak to an officer, they'd ring the local police box. The light on top of(or sometimes nearby) the box would flash and the internal bell would ring.

The lamp would flash in syncronisation with the rings (4 seconds on 2 off I think).

Maplin do some type of phone flasher but the assistant tried to convince me that you couldn't connect any mains lamps to the phone line (what little he knew ;D)

Well, good new and bad news!

Good news is I've found out how the lamp was made to flash when the telephone rang. ;D

Bad news is that the chances of finding one of these units isn't looking good!  :'(

Now as I figure after looking at this is that the top part is a mercury position switch that is connected to the mains supply and the roof lamp.

The lower part is some sort of solenoid which is connected to the telephone "ring". Whenever the phone rings, the solenoid is engaged, which alters the position of the mercury switch to the "closed" position making the lamp light.

Wonder if I can make one?......... :-/

Nice find! Looking forward to more obsessive detail on this one! Yes the bottom thing's a relay, certainly (tho' oddly it doesn't look identical to the only GPO one I can find with Google, namely the Type 3000).

Hi there BigNik, thats very kind of you. I'd appreciate that. If your BT mate has a suggestion for a modern day equivalent (or he/she has a secret supply of these stashed somewhere ;D) then thats one less headache!

Don't know what you're talking about?!  :D (I do happen to have some though!)

I do feel a strong urge to warn people, that when something says DANGER 250Vac it's not a good idea to attack it with a screwdriver (sonic or otherwise) it may hurt :-/.

Hey,Mark;
Ive spoken to my BT friend- if you can tell me the model name or number of the phone you want to install(should be on a plate at the rear or underneath) then we can tell you which connections to make.May even be able to furnish you with a circuit diagram!

[must explain, not been able to reply as I spilt coffee on laptop. now using onscreen keyboard which is better than nothing.]

Hi Mark!
i'll tell my friend the model no.,and hopefully we'll be able to help u.as for your keyboard, there is a way to take it apart and dry it out,but im not the man to ask about that.Re: the relay;unless you want total authenticity, all you will need is a mercury switch--details will be forthcoming!!

It would be very fitting to have a mercury switch in your tardis :)
