I found another photo on Twitter of what is definitely this box, seeing the unusual sign text. For some reason, with Sting. Thanks to Nick Setchfield on Twitter for posting the image.

... For some reason, with Sting...

One assumes they were referencing Sting's band, The Police. Although, even at that time, I'd wager a good number of people would have seen that photo and thought "What's Sting doing in the Tardis?"  :D

OK.  So London people of a certain age, is that phone panel sign accurate?  Was there a point where they'd disconnected the phone lines but hadn't torn down all the boxes, so the panel was a reminder to head over to a handy red phone booth and dial 999?
"My dear Litefoot, I've got a lantern and a pair of waders, and possibly the most fearsome piece of hand artillery in all England. What could possibly go wrong?"

I am currently looking into the source of the Sting image, as I can't find it where Mr Setchfield told me I could find it. (He said it was from either of the October '79 issues from a magazine called Smash Hits.) With the image might be further clues as to where this box came from, or who owned it.

Edit: After another dig through, it turns out I overlooked a page. Here is the page with the image, stating as source "Paul Cantry/LFL(?)". Paul Cantry was a photographer around the time, but I cannot find this mysterious LFL. Or IFI. I don't know.

Looks like it's "PAUL CANTY/L.F.I", according to this transcript: Link.  L.F.I. stands for London Features International. Source Source #2

It also looks like that photo may've come from a concert, as I'm willing to bet the banner in the uncropped version is advertising "THE POLICE".

Yes, so, there exist lists of their concerts in 1979. This concert must've been before 18/10/1979, as it was then that SH Issue 23 was published. The European part of the Regatta De Blanc Tour before that date, which is the closest to 18/10, had several performances between 17/08 and 23/09. On 27/09 they already were performing in the US, so it must be one of the ones before that, as they didn't return to Europe until December.

Here's the list I found, if anyone wants to look, and perhaps knows anything more: http://www.thepolicewiki.org/Police_wiki/index.php?title=1979-1980_Reggatta_de_Blanc_Tour

And whoever brought the box along to be photographed is unlikely to have shipped it all the way to America.

I have this photo of the same box, with another band, called 'Camel'. As the caption references Bjork and Take That, it must be from the early 90s. No idea om where this was taken though!

By then, the phone panel had been changed to black text on a white or light background.

If anyone can figure out which Top 500 is being referred to, we could reverse engineer the year the picture was taken, and possibly even the magazine, which could lead us to the photographer.

Edit: Whilst the article is definitely from the 90s, the lineup of the band seems to be from 1982, the only time there were 6 members. They could've used an older photo for the article, but that'd be odd. Could be handy if we could identify the people on the photo.

Perhaps Camel 'confounded' because their chart entry was an old one from the time of the lineup pictured?

Well... 500 is a BIG 'ole chart. That photo of the band looks to be clearly early 80s, not late 90s. I'm guessing that the article was probably something like 'top 500 albums of the 20th century' as Bjork didn't go solo until what, the mid nineties? And as I've no idea who Camel were (and I got seriously into music and read all the UK music papers every week in the 90s) I'm guessing that's why it was 'a surprise' as I'm guessing a lot of people reading that chart/list article would have been saying 'who the heck are these guys?' So I'm gonna say this was an article that was probably in NME or Melody Maker in 1999 as a millennial type feature? In short, I think the photo was taken around a similar time the photo of Sting would have been taken.

Angelus Lupus

Well, I took a look on Wikipedia (and beyond), and Camel seem to have taken a break in 84' and then come back in '91... Unfortunately I can't find any indication of when and where their 90's albums were in the charts.
