I just come upon a video describing Mechonoid Designs. If anyone decides to make a Mechonoid, this would be the the thing to look at first. (I wish there was a a drooling emoticon here.)  8o.... :o

This is me with my brothers in 1965 at Ealing Studios.

We pulled this Dalek out of a shed in which were also blue Mechanoids (three) and two Coral pink Chumblies !

The chumblies arm was one of those litter pickers.

The Dalek was silver and blue.

There was a cigarette lighter behind the Mechanoids 'gun' disc with a cable attached.

A picture I colourised in 2008 from memory of the colour ( before Southall props picture was available on internet )

I was told by Brian Hodgson that the Mechanoids' voice was created by sticking audio splicing tape onto the active side of the audio tape at spaced intervals.
The tape then ends up looking like the base of the Mechanoids!

I tried it by making a loop of tape and playback after record head on my reel to reel. Worked a treat.

I saw that clip (I think) Tuesday night.  Fascinating stuff!  Mechonoids (AKA Mechanoids) have been discussed so much over the years and the I learn ALL of their screen time (not counting comics, Big Finish audios, etc.) amounted to something like 4 minutes!  That's crazy!

Sincerely,

Bill

Fascinating video. I'm not sure about the claim that it was a one piece mould though, there are undercuts on that shape which would make it very difficult to remove. I'd have thought a two piece mould (at least) would have been used.

Thats very true re. the mould but the point that Gav was really trying to make was that the entire shell of each half of the Mechonoid was one piece rather than several pieces joined.  :)

I've been following your bids for sometime now and they are excellent. They should by rights be Blu-ray extras! Well done again.
As a side note, the TV century 21 of episode 6 expands more on the Idea of a 'robot planet' idea.

Considering what must have gone into constructing each prop I am surprised they weren't saved to appear again. It's like the Rani's TARDIS interior, absolutely awesome and so much better than a repaint of the Doctor's but was never seen again (although I think on the DVD for Mark of the Rani someone says it was saved).

Do they make anyone else think of The Crystal Maze?
I speak to you from the final days of Gallifrey. I am the past you have forgotten. You are the future I will not live to see...

Thank you!  :) Glad you like them! So far no contact from the BBC though!  ;) :D

At least the existence of streaming sites like YouTube, Vimeo and others allows us to see fascinating material like this!

BTW, I really enjoy seeing the CG visualizations like the toy spinning top inspired (but declined) designs and the boxy "Roomba" concept.  Were those constructed and animated by "TheMindRobber"?  I saw clip on his YT page promoting your most recent series and he stated he had done some stuff for you.

Sincerely,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Yes, Gav (themindrobber) and I work together on the videos. They are based on our research together for Dalek 63•88 (although we dabble in other stuff too). He puts them together, so all the images and 3D work are his and he narrates them.
