I'll be honest, I'd not noticed the placement of the lock on the later 80s prop.

Are you going to honour its placement? Or put it further up ala Hudolin and the new series boxes?

I like things lining up when they can.  So with Dragonfire's TYJ box's handles being similar to that of the Barnet style box , I'll be going with that one.

Another Tardis Cut-Away.

A Return To Stockeld Park..  and this time it was open.

Pretty fun day out with the kids.. rather expensive for tickets and lunch though.  Good job we didn't go just to see the Police Boxes - (though they were the instigator!)

Two Police Boxes are inside the maze [although I'd describe it as more of a labyrinth - as its big.  Best to have nipped to the loo before entering!]

One Police Box has a blue light, one a red, and you can (allegedly) talk to the other one.   The different coloured lights are probably so you know you're not completely walking in circles!

Back on the Tardis Tools tomorrow.

A long day today and seemingly not much to show for it again.

Cut the lugs from the 2 doors. (Don't think I've ever written the word 'lugs' down before anywhere!)

Put wood pellets in the screw holes, belt sanded the planer marks from the doors, then pad sanded with a finer grade.   Then routed the hinges into them.

Then I looked at doing the lock.   Turns out that, after all that guff about deciding where to put it, the short latch I have isn't big enough!

Once I'd screwed the middle partition on I realised it makes the door leg a lot wider.   Had a look in the cupboards, shelves and drawers of old fittings for an old usual sized latch - but although I've seen one in the past, none made themselves known today.

Then glued the 2 doors' windows in and screwed the handle on the rhs door.

73-Handle.jpg

And gave them a coat of stuff before coming in.

The board chose to open this thread at the "hand cut the angles for the roof" post, which made me realize how insanely complicated this build actually is.  Becaue off the top of my head, I can't think of ANYONE who gets the roof angles right.  So we slap in some wood putty and paint it all blue.  But if you're working in oak and you aren't going to paint it, there's no hiding mistakes.  You've got to get everything right.  It's all on display.  Awesome.  Keep it up.  And make an oak phone. ;)

That works. ;) ;)

Thank you!

Things often get technical with angles with 'real' work.  But I did have a few head scratching moments working the roof out!

Filler to me is stuff which you use to hide the odd pin hole or crack.  Bucketfuls of the stuff arent the norm!

The casing of the phone does come off easily, and with a heck of a lot of fettling it would be possible to make an oak cover.

Not going to happen here though! :D

Bonus Extra-Curricular Update!

98% of the time I'm building or fitting things on site or in houses.  Today though I was in the workshop, so I thought I could have a go and try and finish this 'door stage' after work, so that its something different next time.

Basically, I did the same as yesterday, sans the hinges.   But I took different photos this time!

Cutting lugs off both the side 'panels'.

75-LugsOff.jpg

Then sanded up the last door and a half, and the last window, then stuck that window in.

What can we see through the TARDIS shaped window?

76-TardisWindow.jpg

One of my favourite tools.  Belt Sander.   Uses are from sanding wood, to shaping things, to being the poshest pencil sharpener on the block!

Then I started oiling them.   Unfortunately it wasnt looking good..

77-OsmoOut.jpg

And managed to get this far..

79-HalfADoor.jpg

..before I had to nip home and get the tin I'd bought ready at Easter when I started.

A label on the tin says its suitable for Humans!

78-Humans.jpg

May not be good for Time Lords?

The wife was also going into town, so I asked her to pop into Screwfix and get another night latch.  (On the 5th cylinder now!)

This standard size latch looks about right to centralise the keyhole on the door leg.

In the previous lock post, I mentioned a Euro Lock which almost said 'Kaled' on it.

Today's cylinder has another Dr Who alien on..!

Still will be using the blank one!

Next Saturday do I fit the lock first.. or move straight onto the posts?!

Posts today.

Previously they had been glued together and I'd done the corner radius' as good as I could with machines - without having the right cutters.

80-Posts1.jpg

Today I planed and sanded the corners down to the line.   The rhs side one is done in this pic using jack plane and rebate plane.  Made lots of curly shavings!

81-Radius.jpg

When I was doing the last one, I was sanding away, and managed a monster splinter under the side of my nail.  The long red bit was the bit which went in.  Luckily there was enough sticking out to pull it back out!

82-Splinter.jpg

Hopefully it all came out.  Oak splinters tend to go septic quite quickly.

Also did the block which will chop up for the post toppers.

83-PostTopsRadius.jpg

Then cut the posts to length, sanded them up and popped ends in.

84-PostEnds.jpg

Lastly gave them a coat of stuff.

Love seeing it completely natural like that, beautiful craftsmanship.
I want notes, lists and answers by the time I finish this here Juicy-a-Box! WARNING: I am Thirst-ay! And it is Fruit Punch! And it is Delicious!"

Dr Who Cut-Away today.

Went to York Racecourse for the 'York Unleashed' event.   Paul McGann was there.

86-McGann1.jpg

Super nice bloke.  We met him a few years ago when Thomas was a baby.  Had to see him again now Thomas is old enough.

I took a print out of some Oak Tardis pics.

87a-McGann2.jpg

And Hannah showed him.

87-McGann2.jpg

Had a little chat about it and he seemed interested.

89-McGann4.jpg

He said it would probably last a long time in oak!

88-McGann3.jpg

(And you can also just see the hole in my thumb in this pic!)

'Til next time!

During the week I did silver leaf on the top signs.   Then first job today was finishing those and putting them in their boxes.

90-TopSigns.jpg

Enthusiasm wasn't running high this morning, but things improved as some assembly began.

Firstly by screwing the LH post to the LH side panel.

91-LeftSide.jpg

Then fitted the half partition to the edge of the door and scribed and fitted the 'three steps'.  Not the quickest of jobs scribing around the corner molding!

92-3Steps.jpg

Managed to partially fit the half top sign too.

Hopefully things will take a lot more shape with next weeks Bank Holiday weekend.

This is so wonderful.  And I missed that you were using silver leaf.  Part of me says the finish is almost too pristine, but then I realize this will be an heirloom and rather than fake the age, over time it will look cooler and cooler as time changes the finish and wax builds up on it etc.

Hands-down my favorite build on the board. Skill, pride, and patience.

This is an absurdly wonderful build! The construction is finer than the any of the actual props or even real boxes.

Wow.  Truly moved by your kind comments.

I wasn't planning on this cabinet taking so long to do - and yesterday did drag a bit.   Next Bank Holiday weekend would be ideal to get 3 long days on it to move it along a lot.  But combined with real work, all work and no play isn't doing me any good.   Part of me today was thinking about not doing anything next weekend on it.. one reason is I'm not a fan of repetitive work!  And the next job is fitting and scribing the other side together..and then the front 'three steps' etc.

As to the construction, I suppose I do have a bit of an advantage with the qualifications I have [BA (Hons) Furniture & Product Design], and having been doing joinery, furniture and building work for over 30 years.  I started when I was 14, working Saturdays and school holidays.    I think a hint of OCD in me makes me want to do a proper job too.  I know perfection is mostly impossible, but I like to try to get things as good as possible, when possible.

Saying this though, I have looked through a lot of other diaries here, and it amazes me how good some Police Box builds come out with only the most basic of tools.

As to using fibre glass and installing 'fancy' electronics..  that won't be happening with this*!   I mostly just do wood, with a mild smattering of other materials.

But seeing the lengths people go to with these materials is enviable.

[*Well.. I may go as far as to put a pendant lightbulb inside, and plug the phone in!]

I have to add that, without the thousands of hours of research which has gone into creating and expanding this site, this box wouldn't be where it is today.

So thank you one and all for all your contributions.

And thanks of course to the little fellow with the (mutual) Tardis fetish who instigated this!

[We are currently on emergency stand-by for when the 5th Doctor Tardis hits B&M!]

Til next time.
Cheers,
