Went down to Crossness Sewage Treatment Works today after being given authorization.

Had to wear full PPE gear: steel cap boots, hard hat, High Viz Jacket, protective gloves and googles
which made taking photos somewhat awkward!
There are 4 Mk5 boxes still standing (just).

The electrics inside were strange. Will upload more photos when I get a mo.

That's marvellous! (speaking as someone who has been able to freeview for decades). You can really make out the depth of the box and the space where the door was.  If only we could get you a working time machine and send you back to London in the 1950s.

Just going through my Crossness images. Still haven't viewed them all yet ( several hundred )  but just came across this!

But what is that on top of the box ??

I'm going to say it's an optical illusion.  It does indeed look like a little skull, but I think it is just a rubber "boot" over that cable that is going into the box--kind of like the end of a spark plug wire.  Time and entropy have deteriorated and deformed its original shape. 

It looks like the pvc cable gland shroud to me.

That is a really interesting picture. Lots of age and decay...

Just had a second look & there is a cable coming out of it, soooo ... it is a cable gland shroud deteriorated. I didn't notice the cable before, (that's what happens when I look at things first thing in the morning).

None of the four remaining boxes has a door anymore. They are all in a very fragile state. From what I can make out, they are no longer used for anything.


Apparently the Bexley Council listing means that they are a planning consideration, but there isn't a legal obligation as with Heritage England listed structures.


Wondering what is the best way to preserve these.

Anyone got any ideas ?  Should they be covered ?

So no opening for a phone door on these ones then. 

I wonder if Ward Westwater knows of the existence of these boxes?

Was there some kind of panel attached to the front wall at some point?

All the other boxes seem to have the same 'panel' marks but I can't see what was fixed into those holes.

There are no telephone doors but all boxes have a Field/Marine Type Telephone Hood fixed to the sides.

These look like they were bolted on at a much later date.

The ownership of these boxes were transferred to us by Thames Water several years ago but the logistics of moving them is an issue.

Well its nice to know they are at least a step closer to preservation.

What sort of stars would need to align to get them removed from the site?

I work at some hazardous sites myself, so I can imagine getting a crane and operator in there to lift them out on a flatbed might prove tricky to arrange?
Or is it a money thing, IF its just money I'm sure we could crowd source a rescue fund with a fundraiser of some sort.
