Ha! Chance would be a fine thing!
I speak to you from the final days of Gallifrey. I am the past you have forgotten. You are the future I will not live to see...

Is the top of its lamp gone??

The piece that is missing is the upper bracket that held the Bell. It would have been held on by the cast iron hinge at the back and the triangular bolt in the front. That kind of damage wasn't just a strong wind one day.

It looks like what happened was someone wanted to change the light inside the lamp, opened the top, but let the bell flop down and shattered the hinge. They might have been able to just put it back and screw it down with the triangular bolt and it would have been fine. Its heavy enough that nothing will disturb it once left in place. However it appear to have been taken away?

Sylvester McCoy and Buchanan Street Glasgow box

why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

Volpone

Sweet baby Elvis.  That makes Colin Baker's costume look positively drab.  The Crocs are what takes it over the top.
"My dear Litefoot, I've got a lantern and a pair of waders, and possibly the most fearsome piece of hand artillery in all England. What could possibly go wrong?"
-The Doctor.

Rassilons Rod

I bet that's a Glasgow box. Buchanan Street, perhaps?
In the cities in the streets there's a tension you can feel,
The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

How much would the restoration of the lamp be?

For instance the excellent image above shows what I presume to be an artifact of a private collection. I imagine that would be quite pricey to acquire. But I imagine there are other lamps in various states of disrepair. Perhaps a new bolt and lid could be sourced, [hopefully the Fresnel is present and intact]

I'd chip in for that.

Also it would be cool to see TARDISbuilders referred to in a News article about restoring a Police Box, and in the heat of publicity someone would declare the Buchanan Street Box as an honorary TARDIS for a day or something.....

It's hard to say, I would assume that this would be owned by Ward. So its possible he has the parts but not the time to make the repair.

The red lamp is in my Collection, I got it in 2013 for 150GBP at the time, the shipping form the UK to Canada was almost as much. I only recently added North American electric fittings to it so I can use it as a bed side lamp. I rather like it, and one day I'll put a PA1 Police Pillar under it, one day...

As for acquisition, the prices fluctuate wildly. If the person selling it knows what it is, the price is high, around 150 to 300 high. If they don't know what they have it can be had for a modest sum. I spotted two on ebay for just 10 to start, two of our number managed to get them for a very low price even after shipping.

So it depends where you spot it, as with all antiques like this it depends on the holder as to the value.

The bell on top is what disappears usually, because its held on by the expanded grating and only that. Once that expanded grating rust out the heavy upper castings fall off.

In conclusion, cast iron parts might be too hard to come by, but it might be possible to develope some 3D parts to replace the missing ones. How much effort would be required, I'm not sure, but with as many of us with lamps as we do, it certainly ins't impossible.

exleo

Somewhere in central Glasgow judging by the banner hanging beside it :)

Teppic

It's the Buchanan Street box.

Teppic

It's definitely Buchanan Street. It's easily recognisable, as it's the only one of the Glasgow boxes with an oversized base.
