why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

The Doctor Who segment of this one - around seven minutes of it! - were recorded the week before broadcast (September 8th - presumably done while the studio was erected for the first episode of the new series, which went out live that afternoon), which means they must have had a slightly lighter show to memorise on the afternoon of the 18th!

I wonder if it was pre-recorded to allow space for the TARDIS set to be built somewhere (a different studio, possibly?), or to allow the transition from Janet entering the police box and arriving inside the ship?

You wouldn't be wrong to assume that part of the segment was pre-recorded. Not all of the shows went out live, and if a particular segment was technically complex or required an edit or two, it would be scheduled for a morning record.

When I appeared on the show along with come friends back in the 1980's (blowing up model Daleks) our segment was pre-recorded in the morning. The show had been trailed in the previous edition by saying "and the Daleks will be invading the studio"...the viewing gallery was packed with people eager to see the Daleks appear (I was in there myself watching the live show go out) and when it cut to the pre record, there were a lot of disgruntled people in there.

So yes, Blue Peter was live..... just not all the time  ;D

This would explain why Colin still hasn't shaved yet. This is excellent information, and really establishes the time of recording. Thank you.

Oh it definitely was pre-recorded - I checked the archive notes!

How brilliant, though! I think I recall the clip pf the Daleks blowing up - with you crouching under a table with Peter Duncan?

When I graduated university I wanted to go into television, and spent a single day on Blue Peter. It was the most stressful day of my life, and I left Television Centre that day thinking 'I'm never setting foot inside a TV studio again'! Aside from popping in to take the odd photo of a prop or actor for Doctor Who merchandise in the last five years, I've managed to avoid them since!

Very welcome! I'm as much a Blue Peter geek as I am a Doctor Who one, so I keep a file of all the episode information and recording dates to hand - easy to check!
