Here's a clearer view of the 'Volcano' box. I hadn't noticed before, but it appears to be lacking a rear sign box.

One model TARDIS which is less well-known is the teeny-tiny version used on the large Pyramid model set for The Daleks' Master Plan (note the hand, for scale). This is the original landing point, as would have been seen to match the studio in Golden Death:

The box used on the record sleeve is definately the one used in the title sequence. The biggest giveaway being that the sign box lettering is out of alignment with the P being slightly raised in comparison to the rest of the text. It's like it on both the sleeve/record photo and the title picture. The photo used on the sleeve looks to me as being the same photo used in the titles...

The auction model doesn't seem to have this feature; however this could just be down to the side that has been photographed. The rest of the box seems to match though. I've got a couple of other small photos of the auction box somewhere, I'll dig them out and post them for comparison.

I'm sure we had the same discussion in the mid 2000's and we identified the box as being the one in the titles.

The Shawcraft box centre divide doesn't extend all the way through the sign box steps like the auction box version does. It's clearly not the same box (although by complete coincidence it was used on the Theme music single cover in the early 70's).

When building my models I've had to pay great attention to the correct positioning of the words in the sign boxes, so I tend to look there first.  In the Shawcraft and Title sequence boxes, the "PU" of Public is smack bang in line with the centre divide.  On the auction box it's the "B" that's in the middle, making the word "Public" completely in the middle of the sign.  This tends to be a feature in the new series props, where "Public" is a lot more central, though not completely.  This is down to the difference in size in the words "Police" and "Box" automatically shunting "Public" to the right.

I suppose you could argue that the sign might have been replaced. Well if it has, it's been done by someone who hasn't taken a close look at a TV Tardis for a while. But as for any other differences, you wouldn't do that to a small model. It'd be fiddly and a pain and it would be easier to just make another one.

The Plans posted up thread show that the model was designed without any rear wall details. :)

That's indeed possible that they followed those plans as per the The Romans model, however at some point all four sides with sign boxes were present...

At the risk of muddying the waters even more, That may not be the Auction model in your picture, rather I think it's the model used in Volcano.

Take a look at the bottom left hand side of the wall and you can see an unusual feature that looks like a rivet:

This is also present on the box used in Volcano:

It doesn't appear to be present on the Auction box.

We noted up thread that the box used in Volcano couldn't be the Auction box, for all the structural differences like the post caps and the different signage, and the earliest evidence we can see of the Auction box would be the photo used on the cover to the 1972 BBC single 'Who is the Doctor'. Could it be that the box was built for that photo shoot, with the picture subsequently reused for the Season 12 title sequence two years later?

The only fly in the ointment of that theory is that the signage and post caps on the 1971 picture look like the ones on the Auction box and nothing like the ones on the Volcano box...

It could be that the Volcano box actually under went a refurb, somewhere prior to 1971, had the top rebuilt resulting in new post caps, signage and central panel dividers that pass through the stepped sections under the signboxes and was featured in the 1971 picture and then had the top lopped off and the rivet removed to become the Auction box?

To coin a phrase - AAARRRGGGHHH!! I CANT STAND THE CONFUSION IN MY MIND!!!!!!

I take your point about this unusual rivet, however when you compare the models, there still appears to be differences.
Look at the corner post cap heights, the thickness of the centre divide, the sign lintels etc etc... I am still seeing a different model...

Here's a comparison of the Volcano model, Spearhead From Space, and the record sleeve.
To my mind they are the same model...

Sorry mate,  I was editing my post to mention the post caps when you posted your response. I noticed the same thing after I posted, as well as the different quality in the lintel signage.

I'm wondering if the box had a refurb at some point?

Is there a version of the 1971 picture that shows the roof of the model?

fivefingeredstyre

Isnt the 1971 picture a screen grab from one of the DVD featurettes?

markofrani

Yes, it was an extra on the Mind Of Evil DVD. Unfortunately there wasn't an image of the roof. Maybe there wasn't one??

with you on that, they are definately the same model (I also think the same model is used during episode 4 of the Claws of Axos when the TARDIS escapes the timeloop)

I'm just wondering if it got knocked about and refurbed after that...?

That's probably not the tiny one from Keys of Marinus, nor the 1:3 from Fury... Right?
In the cities in the streets there's a tension you can feel,
The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

I don't think its the one from Season 1, myself...

Here it is used again in Claws of Axos 4

Axos41_zpsjgywcgqg.jpg

Axos42_zpsifr5bxzn.jpg

You can see another difference in the bevelled panels on the Volcano prop. These are not present on the Auction box.

If it wasn't for the post caps and signage in the 1971 picture being identical to the Auction box and that pesky rivet shown on both the 1971 picture and the Volcano box I would swear they were two different boxes...

I hate it when a mystery goes unanswered, don't you?
