I don't really know what design my TARDIS will look like? Maybe an amalgamation of a few different incarnations. I know that i wanted it to be outside in the garden and that i wanted it to eventually be a weathered part of the outdoor space surrounded by plants and covered in ivy kind-of-thing.

So i did a lot of reading, bit of drawing, lots of YouTube watching... After finally getting on the property ladder back in November 2017, i have a garden that belongs to me and now i have that certain somewhere i can put a certain something! So last year (2018) i bought some wood... I didn't really know how much to buy, and what? so i winged it!
I had printed off a few different plan ideas for the construction... It's basically a shed! I'm using treated rough cut timber, i want that weathered shed look, and i will be staining it blue (maybe a few times) instead of painting it. But... Let's not jump too far ahead!

I have NO wood working experience what-so-ever, limited space to create and build, and limited tools. Thankfully my Dad gave me a few basics that i think the Roman & Saxons used back in the day!!! I rented a mitre saw for speed and ease, this was after i had worked out measurements for my first lot of cutting.
The base was first on my list.
A simple construction (so he says) using 2 X 4" and then 1 X 1.5" for extra support for the hardwood floor i will eventually put in.

That won't be going anywhere when it's done.  Very substantial build.

I hope so Volpone, it's planning to stay put for a while!  ;D

So far into this build it has technically been about 7 days!
Back in October 2018, i spent my first day buying wood, 2nd cutting it to the sizes i wanted, then on the 3rd day drilling all the pocket holes for assembly and screwing together the base.
I work out of the country a lot, so i started back on my build Monday 28th January 2019.
Day 4 = assembly of the main panel frames, day 5 continuing on with day 4 in this freezing cold weather. I also started on the construction of the window frames.

You'll notice that my window frames do not recess into the door/panel frames. I wanted a different (sturdy/meaty) look to my Tardis. I'm also going to make the 'pull to open' door look the same, so that will be coming out of the frames by .5". The white perspex will fit flush against the inside of the 2 doors and only 2 windows on 1 of the panels. the other 2 panels will be facing a garage wall and a garden fence! So I've opted out of windowing those!

DAY 6... Partial assembly, let's see where i'm at?

Not bad if i do say so myself? I'm feeling very positive about my build. Once again, i have NO carpentry or wood working skills AT ALL. This is my first project like this, and if it wasn't for tardisbuilders.com with all the information, forums, plans, archives... this would certainly be a lot harder work!

Although, i'm not looking forward to the top signs and light  ??? ??? ???

It's looking excellent so far. :) Plus points for working in this weather - my build is at a standstill because of the cold. And adapting the design for an outdoor build has much to recommend it.

As an outdoor TARDIS builder, I will give one bit of unsolicited advice:  The bevels on the crossbars are NOT purely aesthetic.  They help water run off.  I didn't bevel anything on my build and what happens is rain sits on the crossbars until it manages to seep in behind them and rot the plywood.  The inside of my TARDIS is a grid caused by where I picked away the rotted wood.

Luckily, I'd done some tile work while remodeling my house an had the better part of a 5 gal pail of premixed thinset mortar laying around that I wanted to get rid of.  So I used it to build bevels onto my trim (as opposed to carving away wood).  In addition to being a material that doesn't rot and providing a slope for water to run off of, it literally holds my TARDIS together because it extended out over the panels so when the wood behind the stiles and crossbars rotted away I had this as a join.  (At the time I didn't realize all this).

So there's something else to worry about.  :)  That said, it's really looking to be a nice build--and far sturdier than my rickety construction.  (Although mine does have 4x4s in the corner posts and that may be the reason the thing is still standing.)

DAY 7... I picked up a few essentials today, i'm not sure what i'll need for this build so i'm buying as i go along. I've borrowed a few tools from my Dad which were used in the dark ages,  everything else will be on a 'when i need it' basis. I managed to pick up some plastic sheeting for the windows. I was going to go down the white perspex look, however i do really like the look of the windows from the Whittaker Tardis. So i'm using this green house plastic stuff which i'll spray white from behind to give me my desired look.

I'm going away to work for a few days now, over to Amsterdam and Bruges. So i wont be back until Tuesday 5th, hopefully i can crack on with securing the flooring and top frame??? Until then i have measured and cut the middle strips for the panels and door. These are just 1 X 1.5" strips. I've also measured, cut, drilled, glued and screwed the 4 corner posts. Hopefully on Tuesday i can assemble what i have to get the dimensions clear for the hardwood flooring panels to go down on Wednesday, along with an 8" box frame for the top!IMG_3048.JPGIMG_3049.JPGIMG_3050.JPGIMG_3052.JPG

It's been a few days now... I was called away to work so things have been a little slow. My Dad's prehistoric tools are starting to let me down, and with all my excitement on my Tardis build I've measured a few tings wrong, which i will have to rectify and use a lot of wood filler to cover up. Hopefully when she's painted, you wont be able to see the odd little oddity!

This arrived today... My 'PULL TO OPEN' sign.
I used PDF provided on this wonderful website, converted it into a Jpeg file and sent it to White Wall. www.whitewall.com
It is a direct print onto Aluminium Dibond, 3mm thick. I've also had it custom made to the size that i actually need it.
Now all i have to do is make the door around around it. This will be 1" thick with a groove cut out of the frame so i can slot the sign in which will also be mounted onto a 5mm thick piece of plywood. Hopefully... It's all in my head!

Ha! In an odd frame of mind as reading the last post--and it opened up to that post instead of showing all the other work you've done.  So I read "Now I just need to make the door that goes around it" and knew you were talking about the phone panel door, but at first my brain thought of the entire blue door.  Then it made the next leap that this would be a novel way to build a TARDIS--phone panel sign first and they build everything else around that.
