Great plans, Tony! It seems with that one adjustment to 3/4", everything else comes in right on the money:

Tell ya what: When I get the bill for one I'll send it over and see how you feel then. :)

Mike, check my post below.  I am not sure on you budget, probably a lot higher than the average builder so this may be just a drop in the bucket.    I don't know your Fresnel size requirements but thought I would pass this along nonetheless.

Is this the post you mean, Karsten? :)

Karst and Purple got their Fresnel lens from Hardware Specialty Co. Their particular lens measurements: height 6" x diameter 6.5"

I spoke to a guy named Joe Wilson.  He was very helpful.   They have about 30-40 glass 360 degree Fresnel lens' left.  They have not sold the glass ones in quite some time.  There going for about $44.00 US.  I ordered one and will post a pic to make sure it is the real McCoy!

I have included the address, phone numbers, web site that Karst posted on my thread for those interested.

Cheers -- Jon

Aye that be the one.   Mike the diagram with the fresnel measurements are on the thread just FYI.

I had a wee bit of time to spare so I took a drive down to South Seattle and visited Specialty Hardware. I met Joe Hickey
and he fetched a FRESNEL for me. It is an impressive hunk of glass. It has flaws, you can see seams and a few air bubbles in the cast glass.
I asked again 'how many do you have left in stock' and he confessed he really did not know as they are 'spread around'. He promised to phone me with an accurate count, when he does I will post it.
I asked again about getting more after the last few sell. He said yes it SHOULD be possible, but the price could be significantly higher and it might require a minimun number of Fresnels be ordered at one time. He promised to check into it and find out how many a minimum order would be (5? 10?) ...again I will post the info when I get it.
I seized the opportunity to get mine at the $44 price. Here are some pix:

It is not 6" true...more like 5.5"

that is the same place I got mine back in the day.  They don't carry them anymore unfortunately.  They sold off all their stock years ago.  I gave them a call last summer as a double check, but no luck.

Appreciate all the help there guys. It's not actually the right shape... the season 18 lens is a 3 order multiorder diffraction lens, not 4. I've got the profile exactly and somebody on this planet of 7.6 billion people will make it. :)

I've debated about this for weeks and have finally made up my mind.  Part of my lifelong mental image of the s18 TARDIS is the drooping signbox topmost edge and the irregular steps' contours.  Ultimately, the box was in this condition far longer than it wasn't.  It's much more representative of the MK I than not.

The CNC process is expensive enough that I just really wanted to be sure before I committed, as I did with the doors, which are practically subtly asymmetrical by comparison.

But, as before, here is my test render of the control file going over tomorrow. All the contours have been precisely matched.  One particularly interesting distortion is that because the whole thing was molded together, when the center of the topmost edge drooped down, it pulled down the downwardly-sloping-top-edge of the signbox itself, too, flattening it out. It's the little things...

Anyway, off she goes!

Have to reschedule because in the middle of the night I got my third kidney stone in 2 months. But while I'm laying here doped up on Vicodin I'll try to put together that CNC video on the door.

So sorry to hear that, Mike! While I haven't experienced them myself, my father had a couple rough ones a few years back, and I definitely remember how painful the experience was for him. While I anxiously await updates on this build, I'd much rather hear that you're resting and recuperating without worrying about keeping us informed. Don't do anything unless you're sure you're up to it.

I wish you all the best, and hope that you recover soon.

Thank you. With a bad kidney stone, you'd twist the head off a puppy to make it stop. I'm not sure what the evolutionary advantage of that level of agony is for, considering there's nothing one can do about it, but when you show up in an emergency room with one, they fast track you past bullet wounds.  Anyway, I usually muscle through them, but today's was an overachiever. :)  I appreciate the well wishes!
