Does anyone have any information or would be able to shed any light on this prop? Casket.JPG

Such as... It's on-screen purpose?  It's production construction?  It's material assembly?

Oops, i'd say it's construction and material history.

Davros Skaro

Well it was used to hold the remains of the "Master" for transport back to Gallifrey, but the "Master" broke out of it.

Therefore I would say that it was a purpose built item by BBC & made to break easily, so would be of weak material, maybe white polystyrene foam or similar. If you look closely at it you can see what looks like the pattern common with foam. Very easy to cut out the shapes, also there is the thin polystyrene that you could make the straps & other bits from & then paint with acrylics as other types of paints can dissolve it.

Hope this helps.

I always presumed this was a hammerite-like paint to give it a metal look.

That too!

Foams good like that, gives the impression of being metal, stone or cement/concrete, that's why they use it, (plus being cheaper & lighter) but you can always tell when it breaks or melts, it's white inside.

Speaking of which when the casket does break apart in the show, I appreciate its a pre-made cut, I'm pretty sure its not foam - it seems too much of a 00s material to use. I would have expected the 1996 prop to be wood or something... but what do I know :D

It could be made of anything really, foam was just a thought. I watched the extras for 2005 season 1 where they did "Big Ben" being broken & they used "Plaster Paris", so that could be another option.

I believe it would've been built by British Columbia production company that produced the Hudolin TARDIS exterior, 7th/8th Doctor Console and Sonics, rather than the BBC.

It's possible the casket may've been made of plastic, or potentially resin, given its elaborate shape.

Check out the thin walls of the prop when it breaks apart, I'm going for 1-2mm hardboard/balsawood

Might there have been two? One with the remote locking movement and one that breaks open?
I speak to you from the final days of Gallifrey. I am the past you have forgotten. You are the future I will not live to see...

I did a 3D model of this for one of the 2E DVDs (Brain of Morbius I think) and have been meaning the set it up to 3D print the parts. I just never really knew the dimensions. So I'm really happy this topic came up.

id say they definately made two props. In some shots you can see the break lines that run over the second Rassillion seal, and they're not present in others.

Yes most likely two, or at least one that they ruined.

You can see shot to shot that the red felt interior has been removed for the prop breaks apart. Or the second prop has the thinner walls.

Yep, definitely no lining in the 2nd picture, so two boxes & if you left click & "view image" & use "ctrl & mouse wheel" to zoom in you can see the white edges where its broken & the missing lining.

Well spotted davidnagel.
