Having another bash at this...

This time with fresnel lense  

Bit of an update, had a go at the lighter weathering.

Jst have to dirty it down with a bit of subtle darker weathering powder, then seal it all with some matt lacquer. Then I can fit the light and sound.

I think it looks much better with the fresnel instead of the cylinder...

The lighting wasn't great so the blue looks particularly dark, but you get the gist...

Those extended cornerposts...  They really say Hartnell.  I wound up chopping them down on my full-size to make it more like a police box and I can't say I regret it but I still get a shiver when I see them on a box.  "The original, you might say; the genuine article." 

It also has lights and sounds...



(the blue looks a little more true to life in the video as well...)

She's a real beauty, Steve! And I've got to say, given what few color photos we have of the Brachacki during her white window frames and the Hartnell years, I think no matter the lighting, your Old Girl captures the changes in blue just like the original did. So I'd say you hit the color spot on. (And as the saying goes for the weather in some parts... If you think the blue is a bit off from what it should be, wait about 10 minutes; the lighting will change... and so will the blue! )

And I agree with Other Steve on the taller corner post caps; they just shout Brachacki. Your weathering is also magnificent. Bravo Zulu, my friend!

Thats nice! Can you elaborate about adding the paint and texture? I appreciate you may have done and I've just missed it and forgotten...

Hi,

The texturing was a mixture of some model filler, roughly applied with a palette knife, and neat acrylic paint, dolloped on with a brush in roughly similar positions as the artex was applied on the real box.

I then painted the box with a base coat of matt coat of mid french blue lacquer, which is a really vivid blue. I then made up a mixture of Dark Prussian Blue and some black acrylic which I airbrushed on as a top coat.

The great thing is the acrylic doesn't stick too well to the  lacquer and will rub off at the slightest touch so once that had dried I carefully took a stiff paintbrush and went over the box, lightly brushing the top coat away on raised sections and panels to match the highlights on the original prop. I started out trying to slavishly match the original; however there are very few colour pictures from 1963, so its not really possible to be completely accurate and artistic license crept in.

There are a number of really good black and white references that capture the positions of the weathering so you can get a good approximation of what the weathering was like...

Once I was happy with that, I gave the box a coat of matt lacquer to seal the paintwork and then applied a grime coat of black weathering powder and shaved charcoal to dirty things down a bit and another matt lacquer coat on top of that to finally seal the paint work.
