I wanted to furnish my spare room and one of the must have items I wanted was a wardrobe so thought why not make it a Tardis wardrobe!
My room is quite small so I would not have the space for a full size Tardis. I have never built anything before either (or done any other form of carpentry) so thought it would be best if I converted a wardrobe.
I picked up a second hand wardrobe for just £15. I didn't want to spend much in case things don't go to plan and I just end up with a vandalized wardrobe.
Here is the wardrobe I will hopefully get to look something like a Tardis, if I can get the chameleon circuit working!

First off I got some thin pieces of wood to create the panels. As the wardrobe is not square it has meant the panels on the side are slightly different in size to the front panels.


As you can see from the first picture the wardrobe is upside down. What would normally be the bottom wasn't flush to the floor and would probably break when I decide to get inside it! I wasn't sure if I should just cut the feet off but decided to fit a frame around it which I would use for the police box sign. My dad loaned me his mitre saw to cut the angles, I'm glad I used this as it looks neater than two square ends.

I looked at all the great projects on this site for ideas of what to do with mine and how to construct the roof. Again due to mine being a wardrobe modification and not being square I had to amend the design. I thought if I had the same number of edges in a smaller space it would just look like a pyramid so have just gone for the one.
I cut out a large square of ply wood for the roof. I plan to fit a working lamp so don't want the top completely covered as will won't the lamp and wire to have a cavity to fit into. With a jigsaw I used a plunge cut to cut out an inner square, as well as still having all of my fingers I have two pretty square pieces of ply.



I created another frame to sit inside this with the inner square to go on top.

I purchased a mechanics inspection light to work as my lamp, I picked this one up from Toolstation. It has an inner glass jar with a metal cage around it so thought it would work pretty well.
I made another frame and cut out a piece of ply for the lamp to sit on.



The lamp had a handle so cut out a hole in this ply as well as the ply underneath for the handle and cable to run through.

I've got my window frames done today (well the ones for the door anyway, I ran out of material!). I used some 6x6mm wood which I glued on, painting where the window would be white.



Also got the bulk of the paint work done. I plan to paint the window frames blue too.



I have ordered all of the signs (certainly beyond my capabilities of making) which have all arrived and looking forward to fitting them on!

Brilliant!  How awesome does that thing look.  I don't think you could have found a better shaped item, second hand no less, for your TARDIS.  Good luck with the rest of the build.  Look forward to seeing the end result.  The inside of your wardrobe will have to have a hook for bow ties of course.

I have now finished all of my window frames and have them painted! For the record it was far easier to paint the wooden frames prior to fitting them on! The paint I used was Saphire Blue from the B&Q Colour range.

All I have left to do now is fit the finishing touches and of course rope someone in to helping me get it upstairs. I don't want to try to materialise it there myself in case I end up in the Jurassic period!

Fitted the door handles, I decided to go for two in a matching size. As it is a wardrobe with two functional doors I thought it might be awkward to open one with a smaller handle.

The Police Call Box signs are different sizes due to it no being square, so I decided to paint all of the wood it is attached to black so the difference doesn't stand out so much.

The doors were to thin to try to attach a Yale  lock so have used a key hole cover. I got this cover from Screwfix, it is rustic iron so has the look I was after.

I picked all the signs and door handles up from various sellers on e-bay.

Don't know what I'm going to do with my spare time now!
