Based on that image:
Comparing my CO 10th Doctor sonic to the accurately sized Wand Company replica shows the new 13th Doctor sonic (well, the US replica at least) to be the same length as the fully extended 9/10th version.
I like that, because I always felt the 11th and 12th Sonics were oversized.

Wow that is a lot smaller than I thought... as t'wer. Could be to keep it in proportion with Jodie's hands. I remember Moff saying he was never in favor of each Doctor having a different sonic but that Smith's screwdriver looked way too big in Capaldi's hand. On a side note I also wonder if the Capaldi sonic was designed for an actor with arthritis; the activator locks in place so doesn't require constant pressure and those bars around the bottom would make it much easier to hold for someone who would be in pain or physically unable to pull their fingers closed to grip a slimmer prop. I just thought I'd mention my theory as prop changes based on money grabbing had been mentioned and this is a possible example of it having been done more out of necessity.

I was brushing my teeth this morning & put my newly opened tooth brush down & then it occurred to me that it reminded me of the 13th doctor's sonic.

So here's a photo of my new toothbrush so you can see what I mean. It's a Dentitex brand from Aldi.

Was just about to post these!  ;D
Oh well, let me add this one which seems to show some concept art/reference being used:

I must admit to feeling a glimmer of pride at the Sheffield steel line. I may have been working in metal casting too long though as my one major criticism of the episode (excluding no opening titles) was how she melted the stainless steel spoons lol.

Given how much merchandise has exploded onto the market, even before the airing of episode 1, I wonder if the Wand Company might skip the Capaldi sonic and release a universal remote version of this in metal.  The only thing is that looking at the design I'm not sure it lends itself to affordable mass production.

Very interesting, BioDoc! Thanks for posting them! You wouldn't happen to have a link to that video, would you? Those photos are just too intriguing; they keep calling out in my head "Watch the video!". :)

Nate, Angelus, thanks for posting your images as well!

Rubbertoe just announced their pre-orders for replica 13th sonics. There are some great images on their web site (they have link-blocking on their images so I didn't attach them here):

Yes, the crystal spins and it has the Sheffield stamp on the bottom!

...and nice closeups in this YouTube video:

So that's the spinning crystal the US toy got right, but the UK one nailed the texture.
Also, the BBC site now has these concept art images:

With the 'print screen' grab function we have images of the Rubbertoe prop.

I haven't kept up to date but doesn't the Rubbertoe guy work in the Doctor Who prop Dept? If so these are probably the most accurate images of the new Sonic.

The light is amber/yellow on TV but red in the pics. I wonder why?

There's an in-house prop workshop and then Nick makes the more gadget-type props, sonics, communicators, wrist gear etc.

I was wondering about that.

Looking at the third pic down it also seems as though the lower half can change position.

I wonder if this means Character Options will be releasing a "version 2" of theirs to include the rotating crystal. ???

That feature was also on the US toy, and again if the actual prop's can change position, will CO add that (and the rotating crystal) to a second release of their toy?

As for the lighting's color, depending on how bright the light is, a red light can look amber (or even yellow) on film. (The 2008 'Knight Rider' Mustang KITT's scanner was red, but at times on film looked almost yellow. It's like the brightness of the red can wash out the camera's optics and giving the film an overexposed look.) But this is just a speculation.
