There was nothing for it, I went and bought some more wood this afternoon. Update coming as soon as I can manage. :)

I take the 5th.
I think we've all been waiting for this one to pop back on our screens :D

It's been ages since I've managed to post an update. The summer has been busy. I have managed to make some progress, but it's not been very showable until now.

Getting the area above the sign boxes sorted has involved dismantling the box and cutting bits out to take the plates that go above.
I also trimmed the posts, which were 1/4" too tall.
I also replaced the temporary hinges I was using to join the halves of each post with lift-off hinges, which arrived in the mail during the summer and sat on my desk for weeks...
I also built out the sides of the posts a little to recess the side walls a little further.

I also made some post caps. I picked up Evil Bob's post cap card template idea. It's a handy way to get all the measurements together.

Here are two of them glueing.

I built a base a few weeks ago - more later - but it's had to wait until I could disassemble the box.

And here it is altogether!

You'd think at this point I'd be almost ready for that blue paint moment...

Not quite yet. ;)

Superb work as always :)

Love it,

Looks great!!

I wound up using 1/8" Masonite for the template.  It doesn't bend or blow away!

Well the card I used was nearly that thick. Possibly the back of an art sketch pad I found lying around in the hall.
One of the joys of being here is picking up cool tips from other people's builds. :)

Back at the end of May I put up this picture of the build redressed approximately as the prop was in its last appearances to look like the Tom Yardley-Jones 80's Tardis.
tyj-doors-front.jpg
I really must go back and add those later post caps... I'll come back to that.

But with some replacement sign boxes, steps and different post caps, one could go more Yardley-Jones...

So I made up some more post caps:

... and also some sign boxes with steps attached. Here are Newbery and TYJ-style ones during the swap:
tyj-signs-on-end.jpg
The signs are the old ones I had for my first build, which unfortunately don't quite fit.

And here they are installed:
tyj-signs-fitted.jpg

So when I'm done with this build it will have three sets of post caps. :o

I'm still waiting for you show us the back and make a joke about it being curtains for us :D

Mate, she looks beautiful (as expected from your previous work). Can't wait to see some blue on her  :)

So if the build is going to have Newbery and TYJ-style roofs, both Newbery and TYJ-style doors and a set of additional TYJ-style sign boxes and post caps, then how hard would it be to make the walls double-sided and reversible, so it can have TYJ-style walls as well?

The real prop had TYJ doors and Newbery walls in a couple of stories, but you can see from the corner that the difference in horizontal rail sizes between the TYJ-style doors and the Newbery walls is really obvious.
tyj-walls-newbery.jpg

My first build had double-sided walls just for appearance sake...

So I made a couple of TYJ walls to join to the backs of the Newbery walls, so I can reverse them:
tyj-walls-assembly.jpg
The weather is not so hot now, so I'm working in the shed.

For the walls on this build I've gone with the plank layout we recently spotted on the original Brachacki walls: top and bottom rails that go right across. With a thin back of plywood these will help the walls remain more rigid. The Newbery walls were not built that way, and the TYJ was fibreglass anyway, so it's not authentic in that respect. But neither is the way I'm joining the Newbery walls to the posts.

And here are the new walls inside the box:
tyj-walls-inside.jpg

and being reversed...
tyj-walls-reversing.jpg

and here's the result.
tyj-walls-installed.jpg
The window frames there are stand-ins - left over from my previous build.

If you don't look too hard it's quite like a Tom Yardley-Jones box. Only the posts, base and back doors are still Newbery.

Your builds will never cease to amaze me, nor will your ingenuity. Next thing we know, you'll build a Ed Thomas box that is able to switch between the RTD and Moffat era looks, corner posts, base, and all  ;D

Can't wait to see this build completed. Any update on the texturing?

I would like to report that this thread is giving me a serious injury. It's making my face get repetitive strain injury from frequently assuming an expression of amazement. For the sake of my face, please cease all building projects immediately and spend your time cooking instead.

For the sake of everything else... MORE!! ;D

Fantastic work, very excited to see how this turns out!
Isn't it how ironic that we have to think of solutions out of the box, in order to build our boxes a lot of the time?

I'd love to see somebody do that, but I'm seriously running out of space.

The Hudolin and the Series 11 Tardis have some intriguing commonalities: the wide windows, the pull-to-open door... so they'd make an interesting pair.

Mrs. S spontaneously offered this new box a home in the conservatory, so there's at least some hope that I'll move on from it Logopolizing the console room...

Alas, my cooking gives people Repetitive Grimace Injury, so you'll just have to put up with it. :D

Definitely a mad man with a box. Boxes. A madman with boxes. Hmm.
