I always seem to forget to start these threads when I start the project.  Maybe I'm just shy about the work in progress.  Well, with that said, I have been working on my box for a couple of weeks.  It's not based on anything in particular.  I love the old boxes and I love the new one, so I combined a lot of elements from both into a generic box that would fit into the hallway of our house in front of my console room.  

It's an ongoing thing, but as of now, I have the main bulk of the box up and in place.  

I'm definately no carpenter but this is the work with some distressing done.


The left window is dirtier than the right.  May need to break out the windex!










Temporary sign in place for the phone panel.  Just a sheet of printer paper.  I have signs that I built in Photoshop that will be cut from a poster print to go on the boxes.  They still need to be built up a bit.  The back boards of the sign boxes are bolted in place now.  

The lantern is perched up there for a height check.  It's just a salsa jar that I'll frost the inside of along with some wooden craft plates.  Yeah, let's see how that turns out.  I've made more with less.  

The box is Olympic Dragonfly blue over a layer of G5 Tinted Gray Primer from Valspar.  I washed over that with a bit of black and brown acrylic mixed with lots of water.

I'll start posting pics of the progress to take you folks back in time with this gal.  Well, let me know what you think.

To answer your question Crispin, it's a whole box scaled down to a 42" base.  It's just missing the back panel.  I am making a back and a sign for the back transome in case it needs to be free standing at some point.

It's pretty cool to be able to walk into the console room through the exterior ( I took inspiration from you on that also Crispin )

They're usually a little confused when they see me duck into the box in the hallway and ask them to follow.   

Seriously a lot of people ask me why I did it.  I simply reply "because I had to..."  Not everyone understands the need to put your ship together I guess.  My friends are supportive, with allowing me space to build and store materials, aid with transport etc.  My partner of six years adores the idea of it and only recently became a fan with the dawn of the new series. 

We don't get a lot of random folk through the doors of our place though.  The occasional neighbor can be seen as we peek through the blinds of the console room at night staring at the house wondering what on earth has landed there.  All in all though it's a great place to hang out.  I love to sit in there and watch DVDs or excercise.  It's pretty cool.  My computer is in there too and I have plans to integrate a flat screen into a wall display that houses the computer as well as using a wireless keyboard mouse setup.  More to come on that I suppose.  I do have ideas for a few wall panels to cover the windows that Will and I have been tossing around (thanks for your help on the box by the way, you and Andy were a great help!)



The idea is to have several textured wall panels that cover the windows, house the computer etc.  I have been looking at ideas for a roundel pattern.  The black part will most likely emmulate my console.  I wasn't sure what do do with that, so I made a lot of variations in the above sketch.  I am sure I want to continue the motif of the black corrugated hoses/cables that I have on the console.  Enough to tie it in, but not enough to make it a jungle.

Will suggested that I go hexagonal and I came up with this as a springboard on the above concept:



Feel free to post sketches in this thread of any ideas/suggestions.  I'm always open to new ideas.

in the first mock up i like the fact that the roundels are large. if i were doing it i would certainly go with that. another idea is maybe curve the wall into the ceiling kinda in the same fashion as the new series console room... thats just my 2-cents what ever you decide will look spectacular i'm sure

With your idea are you thinking of kind of a half pipe that goes onto the ceiling in a few places?  I'm having a hard time visualizing that, but am intrigued by the suggestion?  Could you send me a sketch?

well this is what i imagined. i've played around with the idea of making a console room and curving the walls into the ceiling would be the route i'd go. i like your idea of having loose cables "floating" around between the panels. hope this helps

I love the concept!  I may have to wait for this until after to move.  I want to go all out, but don't plan on staying in North Carolina through next year.  I don't want to run into the same challenges that Crispin has encountered.  I love how it increases the intimacy of the space!  It also opens the possiblity of activiating the relationship with the ceiling.... hmmm.  the ceiling.  Ideas?

ceiling hmmm. i love the new series console room and i would draw off that idea, and tie in the console with it, where are you thinking of moving to?

Prolly moving to the Portland Oregon area in the next year.  Went there for business last October and fell in love with it.  The feeling of ground beneath my feet just felt better there.
