"THE FACE OF EVIL."

Hi all,

So, The Face of Evil represents some subtle changes in Tom's costume that result in one of my favourite looks for him.
The shirt, cravat & waistcoat remain the same, but he now wears a nice pair of boots (NOT the same as those he wore in "Deadly Assassin.")
The trousers are slightly different (wider & a more "Wheatey" colour.)
The coat is not the same one that he wore in "The Pyramids of Mars." It is longer & dark brown, not burgundy/plum.
Also, we see the start of the trend where Tom wears his hat at the start & end of the episode, but the rest of the time It's nowhere to be seen.
I also like how for most of the episode, Tom just drapes the scarf round his shoulders. Looks very cool.

Here's my attempt to recreate the look:

As usual, I have attempted to recreate some scenes from the episode:

Any excuse to get the Leela costume on again....

Anyway, hope you like.

More soon....

Hi all,

It's not really worth a thread of it's own, but I thought some of you might like to see how I made my Neeva costume....

The perforated metal strips were just cardboard painted gold & covered with all manner of tubes & wires I had lying around.
The hat was cardboard & papier mache. The glove was the marigold I had left over from my "Hand of Fear" build. I stuffed it with paper & made the knuckle protection bits out of strips of card. The armoured wrist area was made from a hard plastic tube that dispensed wet wipes. I cut it in half & stuffed it into the glove, then glued the whole thing on to the hat. Then I sprayed the whole thing silver...

145.jpg   146.jpg

Next I added a black wash to weather the whole thing & used red ribbon for the piping.

Not quite sure what I'm going to do with the costume now I have finished doing the photos.

Might try it down the local disco...

Cheers!!

I just spat Heineken over my keyboard!

This thread never fails to bring a smile to my face. Thanks Russ!:D

Are you planning on a VOC Robot next?

And I almost can't wait to see you do Victorian Leela... :D

russellsuthern

As always, thanks for your kind comments, Steve... (watch that keyboard, though... don't want health & safety after you...& we don't want to waste good beer!)
I do feel we all need a bit of a laugh every now & again, especially these days..

I would LOVE to do a VOC robot, but I'm not sure my skills are up to the task...

I'm really looking forward to doing "Talons", though.
Doctor Who as Sherlock Holmes...what's not to love... ;D

Cheers!

Nice job on the build! Well done, If you know any mechanics, you could ask them if they have any old head gaskets which you could have, then use them for the outfit, after a bit of a clean up of course. Just a thought.  :-\

FYI, the clove they use for the hat is a cricket glove, they also use them for the cyberman gloves in "The Silver Nemesis".

As if you needed any further inspiration for this one...

Okay... not sure if this one helps, but you could always add a bit more dressings to the overall costume (removable, of course), give it a light dusting of greyish-skin color (again something removable to restore the costume to its original form), and go to a convention as Dr. Otto Von Schnick-ick-ick-ick... and see if anyone recognizes you!
DrOttoVonSchnick-ick-ick.jpg
(A still from "Dr. Otto And The Riddle Of The Gloom Beam", 1986) Incidentally, this film also featured a bodged-together robot whose head was an upturned bucket, with a face that was a giant, yellow, expression-changing emoji! (Does that ring a bell? And was that inspiration for what we saw in Series 10? Though that's a discussion for another topic.)

Hopefully some of this was helpful, Russell! And keep up the great work! Like Steve said, you always manage to put a smile on my face... though being allergic to beer it's usually something else - tea, juice - that I end up spewing... with the occasional presence of mind to turn away from the keyboard before it happens... most times, not always. ;D (Type-able keyboard covers are a good thing to have, just in case.)

Hi guys.
Hope you are all well.

Davros... My 1st thought was a cricket glove, but I didn't have one & I didn't want to spend any money on what was going to be a relatively minor build.
A cricket glove would have looked better as it would have been bigger, but I'm not too worried... It was good enough for what I wanted.

Dino...  That's a great pic of Tom. You'd have thought he'd be a perfect fit for playing Sherlock, but in interviews he always said he didn't think he was right for the role.
I'd love to see it to make my own mind up, but it never comes on the telly, they usually show the Cushing version.

I have never heard of "Dr Otto & the Riddle of the Gloom Beam"... You truly are a master of obscure film trivia...
It looks bonkers!!!

Best regards to one & all,

Russell

Hi all.
So, I'm not quite finished with "Face of Evil" yet.

I decided to make a Horda (After all, they can't touch you for it...)

Here's the real thing...

168.jpg

Here's how I'm attempting to make mine:

First I took a length of hose pipe. I cut it & glued it into progressively smaller rings, which I glued together, trying to create the "S" shaped wiggle of the body.

h1.jpg

Next I added a cone of card to the end, around which I wrapped rope, then wire, so the whole thing would taper down to a point. Through this I pushed a sharpened chopstick to make his "sting":

h2.jpg

I then moved onto the main body, which looks like it has an armoured layer of bone across it with a prominent "T" shape ridge. I made this very simply using card & filler:

h3.jpg

Head next. More cardboard, but the reference picture seems to show a brown "wedge" formation in his mouth, which I made using card & papier mache. I also noticed he seems to have a couple of flippers or fins either side of his sting, which I added, using more card:

h4.jpg

Getting there now.  :)
I made some wings for him from transparent plastic from a paper file holder.
I cut a tongue out for him from a plastic milk carton, painted it black & glued it on.
Originally I thought about using eyes from a cuddly toy, but the Hordas eyes are very small & sort of almond shape. In the end I used two halves of a peanut which I painted white & glued on. I think they look kind of menacing & cute at the same time.
Finally, the Horda have a strange circular protuberance on the top of their head, almost like their brains are trying to force themselves out.
I glued half a small plastic ball to my models head, then roughly covered it in filler to give it that organic look:

h5.jpg

So that's where I'm up to now.
He needs painting & he's finished.
At the moment he's just sitting there staring at me as if I'm his dinner...

h6.jpg

More soon, if I don't get eaten first...

Russell

Hi all.

Well, Iv'e finished my Horda & I'm quite pleased with him, but I think the colours I used look a bit too vibrant compared to my reference picture.
However, the reference picture is a screen grab & they always come out a bit fuzzy & muted.
Also, the forest scenes were all filmed with pretty dark "mood" lighting, which would have made the Horda's colouring look more muted on screen, so I could be fairly close to the original.
Anyway, in my mind, the Horda are a bit like chameleons & can adjust their colouring to their environment, so it's all good.
I might go over him with a brown wash at some later stage, but at the moment I'm not going to loose sleep over it.

I have also been wondering if they had Horda like animals on Mondas & these were the critters they used to convert into Cybermats, as the resemblance is definitely there...

Anyway, here's some pics:

171.jpg

He still needs a bit of training...

172.jpg  173.jpg

Feisty little fella, isn't he?  I like to think he's just being friendly...

We'll see how he handles when I take him out for walkies!!

Cheers,

Russell

Howdy all.

Time to move on to:

"THE ROBOTS OF DEATH"

Tom's costume is almost exactly the same as in Face of Evil. The only change is that he reverts back to his brown brogues, rather than the boots.
We also see the continuing trend of him stuffing his hat into his pocket rather than wearing it, which for some reason annoyed me no end at the time.

However, ROD is one of my fave episodes, so I am definitely going to try some cosplay from that adventure.

Here's where I'm up to.
See if you can guess what it is...

The correct answer will win a massage from a deranged robot.....

Cheers,

Russell
