Actually, if you re-watch "The Girl In The Fireplace", you'll notice this tie does have red accents inside certain areas of those blue swirls. This was the first time this tie appeared on screen. For Matt Smith's debut episode, the red accents are very toned down. I'd have to look at "The End Of Time - Part 2" again to see if the red is there near the end before the 10th Doctor regenerates, but the red is brighter in "Fireplace".

Here's the original tie (replica: original as in "when first seen on screen") heavily researched by someone working closely with the vendor still selling it:

Nice blue embroidered pattern with the red/burgundy accents in it. You can even see some red on the back in this photo, which means there is red farther back than just on the front of the tie.


Here's a closer view of the tie to see where the red is (on the front at least), and get a better look at the pattern and embroidered blue swirls.

Now here's a photo of the tie as it appeared in "The Eleventh Hour" (and possibly the final scenes of "End Of Time - Part 2")... incidentally this tie wasn't available until after both episodes had aired:

The pattern of blue swirls is basically the same, but the red isn't there this time.


And a closer look at some of the pattern and embroidered blue swirls.

Both are still available for sale. (I might put a link to this post in "Props from the Shops".) The price for each tie is comparable to what one would pay for a regular tie in any clothing store, possibly lower, so they're affordable, though the tie without the red is slightly more: not sure why on that.

Anyway, I hope this helps with getting the pattern rework on your tie as accurate as you want it, 14th.

Oh sorry Dino, I should have been more specific! Yes, you're totally right, both ties had the red on.  
(In all fairness too, it was Steve Ricks who did the legwork on this.)
If I remember correctly, the tie from 'Girl in the Fireplace' and 'End of Time' are the same tie made by Christian Lacriox. It has the red present, but it's a subtle effect created with dye which doesn't always show up in the light - hence why sometimes the tie looks completely brown.
In 'The Eleventh Hour', when they needed some battered ties, the costume dept. made a selection of their own, replicas of the original, but they recreated the red using bright red silk sewn into the gaps, so it looked red in all lights. Hence a lot of people thought it was an entirely different tie!

EDIT: I just re-researched after a closer look at your images and apologises, turns out I was completely wrong! The Elevenh hour tie in your last image was made as a replica by the costume department but there was no red silk! The red silk I was thinking of was added for an entirely separate replica that I was mixing up. Apologies!

No apologies necessary, Richard. Trying to keep all of these ties straight is not an easy thing to do. I know Steve Ricks did a lot of legwork for some of these ties, and his research into the costumes is as thorough as Tony's research is into the sets, consoles, and TARDIS props. Another person I only know as "Risu" was also involved with researching some of those ties, so they were definitely a group effort, and kudos to everyone involved for getting them as accurate as possible to the originals.

Indeed I did! I finally got round to flipping the image in my last update so that the patterns would appear the correct way around (and it’s only taken me 2 years! ) I completely forgot that it would’ve shown up on the home page.

Dino, superrichi1a: Thanks as always for your help and research with the ties (and to everyone else - Steve Ricks, “Riso”, etc. who probably won’t be reading this but contributed towards the research nonetheless.)

I managed to find a few tutorials that should give me some tips on how to remove the old fabric paint on my tie. If any of them work, I should have the next update up within the week.
