Have some more:

By the way, there are two police boxes there. The second one is in the crate beside the unpainted one (you can see the lamp fitting peeking out of the top).

Wow! Thanks for sharing. Any ideas about where and when these were taken?

What a rare treat! It's shocking how much the colour messes with perceptions of depth and proportion - I think for example the corner posts are far more pronounced here than they would normally look. Will this be repainted soon?

(On that matter, I also just had to explain to my girlfriend why I got so excited over the laptop. I told her it was the football, but she could tell I was lying, so I had to try to explain why seeing a TARDIS in concrete was a 'whoop!' worthy event. Moments like that make me question my sanity, but then I realise that I'm normal, and anyone who isn't excited by a concrete TARDIS is clearly a miserable whatsit!)
Isn't it how ironic that we have to think of solutions out of the box, in order to build our boxes a lot of the time?

Dalekoracle

I totally agree. The depth of the recessed panels looks a lot deeper... of course its not, but a coat of blue paint, and it doesn't look so pronounced.

As for where and when, i have no idea. I'd love to think the photos are relatively recent (looking at the trees, maybe Springtime this year? Who knows?) and that there might be two more boxes appearing on the streets sometime soon.

The recessed panel depth? Granted the front wall panel (the half-width wall) does have deeper recesses than that of the blue door (which is wood), but then that wall is designed to have the phone cubby below the window, and a First Aid cubby below that (on this mark anyway). But the window is certainly recessed deeper, probably because the wall thickness is thicker to accommodate the aforementioned cubbies and their doors, and it only makes sense to have that half-width wall cast at a uniform thickness.

Taking a closer look at the side and rear (full-width) walls, even without the blue paint those walls' recessed panels look to be recessed close to the same as those on the wooden door. So it's possible that all walls except the front were cast thinner because they didn't need to have cubbies installed in them. There's also a small taper inward where the center divides meet that topmost step above the windows.

Also, did anyone else notice that the corner posts don't have quarter-rounds/quadrants on them? Their edges are all smooth, at a 45-degree angle to the sides of the posts. (Is this a trait of this particular mark, or were those a purely decorative thing that was added after the fact? My guess is this quirk is particular to this mark, but am always happy to be proven wrong.)

Brilliant photos, Mark and Teppic! Thanks so much for sharing them with us!

Oh... Richard... what an opportunity you've missed with this one. You could have really had one over on your girlfriend if you'd only exclaimed "Oh, you sexy thing! And naked, too!" That would have brought your girlfriend running, and then once she saw this box, you could have explained that it wasn't every day one got to see a Police Box "unpainted". ;D ;D ;D

Yes, i know this, I was looking at the other three sides and the "standard" configuration of the walls. Without the coat of blue paint, it 'looks' as though the corner posts stand prouder, that the recessed panels look deeper... its an optical illusion of course.

Its such a shame that the clean lines of the original Met Box design (he front face of the box) was amended to cater for the 'phone mechanism of the Glasgow system, as (for me at least) it detracts from the overall design. That said, how bloody wonderful that so may Glasgow boxes exist!

Now this is exciting! It finally gives a bit of context to those rare old police box photos (such as the Ickenham Village box) where they look unpainted!

Now I'm going to have to find time to do a comparison between the London boxes and the Glasgow boxes.  Because unless there's a whole facade that goes over the POLICE BOX signs, I can't see where that light opening would work with a London box.

The glasgow boxes are all in the style of the early concrete mk1s like this one:-

mk1r2c.jpg

So the slot you can see is for a sign that attaches on top of it rather than the later boxes where it was recessed into the sign box.

It is also lacking the rounded corners

The glasgow boxes differ from these mk1s as the door and phone sections only have 2 panels as the double height one was used for a fire extinguisher panel.  The phone door hole is designed to take an Ericsson speaker phone rather than opening into a cubby with a telephone in it and the lamp on top had a bell on top of it rather than inside the box.

Nice picture Starcross', thanks for sharing. I was going to post that  the boxes behind it was just the right size to house a police box, then I saw the lamp and then I saw your  comment.

The top of those "standard" police box lamp housing does make a rather nice ringing noise, but I've seen three now close up and none of them have had the additional mechanism for making it ring.

I would have to guess they were only installed on boxes in really noisey, non residential areas.

There's a Sill only on one window on each panel as opposed to on both windows. I wonder why? (Unless it's just the way I'm looking at them?)

mechanoid

I think the ones with the sill are opening windows!

If you look closely at the second photo that Teppic posted up-thread, you can see the outline around the slot where the POLICE sign was. The box's concrete is a slightly different color from the age, weathering, and probably paint; the area under where the sign was looks like it may have been somewhat protected from those elements. You can barely see it on the other sides, but the second photo shows it the best.
