Russell, I found that cravat pattern. It was in PDF format so I had to convert it to JPG (and then reduce the size because it was massive!). I think my friend that created it did it with the intention of having it print out full size because it was 10,300 x 7,200 pixels, at 300 dpi!

8thDoctorCravat(Reduced).jpg

I think it posted well enough. ??? I've reduced it so it's 3,000 x 2,000 pixels (still 300 dpi). Open it in a new window to see it full size. The measurements are still legible, though a little fuzzy in spots.

I haven't been able to get the wife to try making one yet. (She's had her plate full enough with just me since I had to retire, and then Stormageddon came along. :P I did try to get The Evil One to make it, but she always found a reason that was keeping her too busy... and now she lives in Japan. :P :P :P)

Hopefully it works for you. (I'm curious to see how good the pattern is.)

Dino.

Thanks for the pattern, Dino, I'll have to give it a go & let you know how it turns out.

Karsthotep:  You get half a point for guessing Morbius' claw,

Hordriss:  You get half a point for guessing the Krynoid's tentacle...

You'll just have to share the prize, which is a free ticket to the Tinclavic mines of Raaga.

Enjoy!!

;D

Cheers,

Russell

PART 10.......SERIES 13......(Cont...)

THE FROCK COAT.

Now onto a part of Tom's wardrobe very dear to my heart. I love a good frock coat, so let's take a look at Tom's & my attempts to mimic them...

We first see Tom in a frock coat in "The Pyramids of Mars."  At first glance it looks brown, but it is actually a very dark, rich plum colour.

My first foray into buying costumes from proper cosplay specialists was an attempt to emulate this coat.
Some of you will have seen my review of it here on TARDISbuilders.
It turned out much redder than I thought it was going to be. Almost like a hybrid between Tom's series 12 jacket & series 13 coat:

coat 1.jpg    coat 2.jpg

Totally inacurate, but I do love it. Strangely, I see so many people wearing red coats to cosplay Tom that it is almost developing a canonicity  of it's own...
I even found this while researching coats...
coat 3.jpg   coat 4.jpg

I was surprised to see such an accurate model sporting such an innacurate coat, but as I said, you see the red coat around so often, it does seem to be developing a legitimacy of it's own...

Reminds me of the "Radio Times Dalek"  (a.k.a The "Weetabix Dalek".)
For those of you who don't know...
When the Radio Times did their first Dr Who anniversary special, they did an article on Terry Nation.

There was a big photo spread of Terry in his palatial courtyard surrounded by Daleks, some of which were his own. Over his shoulder you could see a strange Hybrid, which had the silver body of a 2nd movie drone, but the dome of the Red Saucer commander. (& one red & one blue dome light- priceless!)
Although this was never seen on screen, it starts popping up on all kinds of Dr Who merchandise, artwork, etc. It was featured in the famous Wheetabix cards we all used to collect as kids & they even made a toy of it!
RTD 1.jpg   RTD 2.jpg

Just goes to show how sometimes these things, like the red coat, can develop a life of their own, outside the series.

But I digress....

So the hunt is on for a brown coat. Until I find one, I'm simply using this dark mac that I have had for years.
Once the rest of the gear goes on, it looks surprisingly good, as I hope the full costume photoshoot will show...
coat 5.jpg   coat 6.jpg

I use this old grey overcoat for Tom's 2nd coat, which we first see in "The Android Invasion." It starting to show It's age a bit, so I'm tempted to try to modify it a bit to make it more accurate.
If I added some dark cuffs, some leather elbow patches & a couple of buttons at the back, we could be approaching something quite accurate...
coat 7.jpg   coat 8.jpg

Now this one is quite interesting....
I found a website selling ex rental wedding gear & got this formal grey/silver frock coat for £70.
coat 9.jpg  coat 10.jpg

Again, not 100% accurate, the bottom part of the collar is dark, not the top part & there are no cuffs, but it does look smart!

It even has a button loop to do up the front, just like Tom's in "The Android Invasion!"
coat 11.jpg...coat 12.jpg

Sweet.

And one final thing before I sign off on coats...
I'm always on the lookout to upgrade my wardrobe.
My season 12 jacket was a quite dark maroon, but Tom's jacket was quite a bright, vivid red, so I wanted something brighter & found a bright red jacket in a charity shop. Not corduroy, but wool, but very bright!
You can really see the difference when the two are pictured together.
(Old one first, new one second...)
coat 13.jpg

Well, that's about it for this section,
As always, thanks for reading.

Till we meet again....

Regards,

Russell

You've done an amazing job! Most of what I want to say has probably been said. 3 things I want to leave for future cosplers however:

The green fedora is something you'll have to order custom, but the brown one is the same cut as Indiana Jones's. Available in many camping stores.

The BBC licenced scarves get the colours right, but the stitching wrong. When you stretch the fabric, you should see grooves from side to side, not top to bottom.

Hello cosplay is an awesome place to get coats and other speciality items. Be aware though that they're working from what's on-screen and they make mistakes. My coat from season 13/15 has velvet instead of corduroy and leather. Most people won't notice, but you'll know every little thing that isn't accurate and have to live with it.

Hey Bearded!

Thanks for the comments!

Regarding the BBC licensed scarves:

I got a scarf made by Lovarzi.
Not new, but 2nd hand from one of my students. I always thought I'd prefer home knitted scarves, but I actually really like this one & tend to wear it with my darker coats, as it really makes the colours of the scarf "pop".

scarf.jpg

So I thought I'd do a little review here.

As I said, I love the colours & the quality is good too. It is acrylic yard, which is light but warm.
It's ever so slightly long for me & the ends do trail on the ground a tiny bit.
I could take it up a bit, or invest in a rack....
The only downside I have noticed is that it catches & pulls on the chain of my TARDIS key if I wear both together. I don't know why, it doesn't happen with my other scarves... maybe it's because it's acrylic & not wool?
If I have the catch further down, closer to the key, rather than at the back of the neck it seems to alleviate the problem.

Anyway, I think It's a really good buy & pretty accurate for a commercial product. :)

And, before I sign off....

Do TARDIS socks count as cosplay? ;D

That's all for now folks!

First, Russell, let me say that your breakdowns of the 4th Doctor's outfits are coming along wonderfully! (So are your recreations!) Now, moving on from there...

Spotting this difference took me until just now to figure this one out, and I've been looking at this image for at least 38 years, and I think many of us have been also:
Reversed.jpg
Looks okay, but upon looking closer at this...

RightWay.jpg
It's been reversed! Look at the way Tom's waistcoat buttons closed; above is right-over-left - the way a woman's garment buttons closed. Now look at the image immediately above (which I've flipped) and notice the button closure on the waistcoat: left-over-right, the normal way a man's garment buttons closed. (I'd seen this for decades and not noticed that!) The absence of the bow on the side of Tom's hat should also have been a giveaway, but... :P

Well... okay. You asked for it! And in keeping with the spirit of the original, where all the images appearing in the "bubble" were B&W, I've removed the color from the images used. (Now then... take your pic. <there's a joke and pun in there>):

That actually made me laugh out loud, Russ, Nice one, I'll have what you've been drinking...:D

How many funny looks did you get in the park when you were posing with the Krynoid and the corpse?

russellsuthern

Thanks for your kind comments guys.

Dino: I noticed that image was reversed too... I actually got that image from a book, rather than the internet & with books, they do often reverse the image, depending where it is going to be on the page. Apparently figures should always be looking into the center of the page, rather than out to the edge, which does look a bit odd....

Although the "Spot the difference" gag was actually relating to the image of Tom & Lis in the TARDIS & the fact that in the 2nd picture she has mysteriously vanished....

I think you are certainly in the lead so far, competition wise ;D.. I think the last one is best...that wooden puppet bears an uncanny resemblance to Jon Pertwee....

Unfortunately, your prize was knocked over & smashed during a scuffle with a burly mute one armed butler & got trampled on.
Seriously, you just can't get the staff these days...

Steve:  I ALWAYS get funny looks, when I'm out & about taking my snaps (my poor missus really does suffer....)

There was a bunch of lads playing football in the park & when I got my Krynoid out, they just all stopped & stared dumbfounded!

When I put up my Scorby & set about pulling his head off, a little terrier ran up to him & proceeded to have a wee against his leg!
His owner rushed up to apologize, but when she saw what I was doing, she just grabbed the dog & ran off!!

Every day a new adventure....

Best regards to all,

Russell

That is odd, about the photos and book pages. It's also odd that when I see that image on the net it's also reversed. You'd think the person(s) writing the book would want the images to look right, and if having a person in the photo looking toward the edge of the page looks strange, at least I would try to arrange things in the book to get the image on the correct page for the way said person was facing, rather than reversing the image... which makes people like me think they weren't paying attention to how they oriented the photo. (But maybe that is just me.)

Ah... maybe you should have asked some curious person to take the photo so your missus could have been the stand-in for Lis. Or you could have said to a curious woman on-looker with dark hair, "Excuse me. I'm the Doctor and trying to take some photos. Would you be my Sarah Jane for a moment or two?" (No telling what sort of reaction that would have caused!)

You know, I've never realized that before: Jon Pertwee, the Snow Miser! :o

Oh. About that. I forgot to mention in my post that if I happen to win, I would gladly donate the prize to someone that actually needs a brain. (I can think of several, but it's best if I don't mention any names. Side note to that: it's not any members of TB, so no one worry that I'm mocking you.)

Okay... I think this sort of indicates what sort of reaction you might have gotten by asking some dark-haired woman to be your Sarah Jane for some photos! ;)

You know Dino,

I was in Tesco the other day & saw a slim, middle aged woman with long brown hair doing her shopping.

She wore slimfit jeans with brown boots, a shirt & waistcoat.

I kid you not, she was such a dead ringer for Lis Sladen in "The Sarah Jane Adventures" it was incredible.

It took all my control to resist approaching her for a photo!

I was a bit worried about being arrested for harassment, so I decided discretion would be the better part of valor!

PART 12.... Series 14.

Hi all,

Time to dive into series 14 :)

Most of the basics remain the same, so I'm not going to go over old ground, but just dive straight into the full Cosplay pics, story by story as I get them done.

So "Masque of Mandragora" is a memorable story for me because we get to see Tom using a sword!
Now this isn't the first time the Doctor uses a sword.
Tom briefly grabs one in "The Seeds of Doom" & who could forget the great duel Jon Pertwee has with Roger Delgado in "The Sea Devils?"

However, this is the first time we really see Tom engage in some proper swordplay.

Here's some pics...

84.jpg  85.jpg

86.jpg 87.jpg

Tom uses a fairly standard medieval sword with a straight, double edged blade, a basic grip & pommel & a simple cross guard, turned up at the ends.
I collect swords, but ironically, this is one style I don't have in my collection!
Anyway, I thought the police might get a bit itchy if they saw me running round a park waving a sword, so I made one, which is fine for the photos.
First I cut out the shape in cardboard. I sandwiched 2 pieces together with coat hanger wire in the middle to stiffen it, then taped it together with masking tape...

88.jpg

Quick coat of paint & a red jewel added to the pommel & we are done!

89.jpg

I did write an article once on all the different swords Dr Who uses throughout the series. I'm sure I could dig it out if anyone is interested....

Okay, On to  "The Hand Of Fear."

Some publicity shots of Tom inspecting the hand in the quarry show off his shirt, waistcoat & cravat very nicely...

90.jpg  91.jpg

92.jpg  93.jpg

(And yes, I did get some funny looks from beach goers as I took these shots!)

If anyone wants to know how I made the hand, the build diary is here:

http://www.tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=8764.msg110462#msgx110462

Hope you like the shots.
It was a gloriously sunny day & I had great fun running round as Tom Baker! :D

Hi all!

Part 13.... The Deadly Assassin."

I am very excited to be able to continue my 4th Dr Cosplay thread by showcasing one of my favourite episodes, "The Deadly Assassin!"
This episode, as well as having an exciting & intriguing story, also showcases some brilliant set, prop & costume design.

I have been inspired to really push the boat out with this one, so I hope you enjoy my efforts!

Here we go...

DOCTOR WHO & THE DEADLY ASSASSIN
                                                                  EPISODE 1

We first see the Doctor in the TARDIS on Gallifrey, after answering a summons to return home.
He is wearing pretty much the same gear from the previous episode, but he has now taken to draping his scarf round his shoulders rather than wrapping it round his neck.
This is probably because the scarf has got shorter, but also because it must get hot filming in studio & this is a more comfortable way of wearing the scarf.
I love the look because it shows off the collar & cravat better.
At one stage he even turns his collar up & drapes the scarf round the outside, a look he will adopt more often in later series':

94.jpg   95.jpg

Suddenly The Doctor has a premonition that The President of the Timelords is going to be assassinated! (Presumably by some kind of Deadly Assassin...)

96.jpg

In order to infiltrate the Panopticon, The Doctor borrows some Timelord robes...

97.jpg   98.jpg

99.jpg 100.jpg

I have said many times how much I love this costume design. The words classic & timeless spring to mind..

For details on how I made my Timelord robes, this is the thread:

http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=8768

As the President makes his entrance, The Doctor makes a break for the upper gallery, where he grabs a stazer & fires!

101.jpg    102.jpg

It looks like the Doctor has shot the President!! :o

Episode 2 will follow shortly...

Best regards,

Russell
