Ugh.  I'd offer to send you some ceiling texture paint, but when shipping costs are factored in, it would probably be about the same as what you'd pay in a store.  I once did a trade with someone from England--he wanted lemon pepper spice and I wanted a TARDIS key.  I felt a little bad about my side of the deal, given that lemon pepper is available at any supermarket--and fairly inexpensively--until I found out what it cost to mail it.  I don't know what the TARDIS key cost to mail.  I probably could have got one cheaper online (it's a BBC licensed one), but then my acquaintance wouldn't have had any lemon pepper.

Rather than using up the porridge oats mix (which could possibly attract unwanted critters - they also like to eat PVA glue, at least from what I've read about them), can you try mixing in some of that sawdust, small wood chips (splinters), and a little of the uneven sand you find naturally on a beach? (Some ordinary dirt swept up from the drive, or scooped up from some spots around where that stuff gathers, could substitute for the sand if a beach is not within driving distance.)

Failing that, some shredded/mulched newspaper might also work for the mix. (Not quite as much mulched paper as a few members have used to create that coral look on their 2005 consoles, but a little of that might be less expensive than using up the oats mix, and a great way of recycling/repurposing those old newspapers you have lying about.)

Brilliant build as always, Crispin, and I hope some of my babbling helped a little.

I was thinking wood shavings & builders sand as well. Beach sand tends to have salt in it & would need washing or the salt would eventually rot your timber, where builders sand has already been washed & is clean.

Might I suggest the PVA and toilet paper method Glen and myself used for the coral on our Tennant consoles? It's hard as rock, and I believe that with some creative reworking of the proportions and careful application you could get very close to the texture you're after. I found that if I used less water and a bit less PVA glue I got a much drier texturing material which I could really level on and work with my hands to spread it out into the areas that I wanted. It did occur to me at the time that if I ever made a concrete-textures TARDIS I'd use that method, though much more sparingly than I did with the coral! :)
Isn't it how ironic that we have to think of solutions out of the box, in order to build our boxes a lot of the time?

(been busy ...)

These are great ideas, guys. Thanks! I'll give them a go and see what I can come up with.

Sorry Dino! Didn't notice you'd already thought up the idea! Doubtless to say I agree whole-heartedly  ;D
Oooorrrrr.... Maybe it's time you jumped the shark and made a concrete one Crispin ;) I've always wanted one made of chocolate, myself. One day I hope to see a TARDIS made entirely of rum and raisin fudge.

I'm sure someone will eventually, but it won't be me. :)

No worries, Richard. I just swapped out the TP for the newspaper since some flat shreds of that would give the look of chipped layers of paint that had been painted over. I had thought of suggesting TP, but you have more control over the mulching with newspaper than you do with TP, and while TP works beautifully for the coral effect, it might not work as well for the chipped-layered paint effect.

Oooh... I think it's like Crispin said: someone will one day, but it isn't going to be him... or me. (I can barely lift a gallon of water! Can you imagine me trying to lift a TARDIS wall that's been cast in concrete? I'd be done for. My back would snap and I'd be in surgery again, and possibly in a wheelchair after that one.)

I have no idea what you've been drinking, my friend, but my medication be damned: I'll have what you're having! ;D

Has there been any recent progress, Crispin?

Scarfwearer

Alas no. It still looks pretty much exactly as it did in that last photo from the Cunning Plan update.
Stuff unexpectedly came up. And then more stuff. And then more stuff.
I'm really hoping to get back to it very soon... but it's always a mistake to make promises as to when.
I have managed to get out to the workshop and cut some pieces of wood in the last couple of weeks, so I hope to have an update soon.
Thanks for asking though. It's good to know people are still interested. :)

Definitely interested! I was thinking about this build in the last days, but I don't like to prod.... :)
