I'm actually in the process of building a replica of the bow tie box. A long time ago (when Big chief studios was in the process of making their 7B 11th doctor) Big Chief released a photo of the 3d model of the bow tie box. I'm not sure if it's accurate or not, but from what I can tell, it looks spot on! These are also the pictures I've been using to model mine off of. It's really intricate and very hard to sculpt, so if anyone has any suggestions on how to make this bugger, let me know ;D

I've started to remake the top out of pink insulation foam. I's a lot easier than carving out of wood or sculpting out of clay. After I'm happy with the carving, I'll mold and cast it in resin. IMG_5354.JPG

WOW!! :o :o That looks brilliant! The level of detail you've managed to capture is just outstanding! :o Hopefully the casting goes better this time (fingers crossed it doesn't destroy the master copy); I can't wait to see your box completed.

Finally finished my replica. casted the top in resin and attached to a modified wooden box from a craft store.

Wow! :o That is some serious carving you've done for that lid! (I wish I had that sort of talent; I'd make one of those for a bow tie that I have.) The color of the box is about spot on with the original. What did you use to color it (paint, stain)? And what's the name of the color you used? This is a brilliant bit of artistry and it makes that box look like something anyone would want to have (and not just for putting bow ties in).

Thank you very much! To color the box, I did a coat of solid black acrylic paint then dry-brushed with burnt sienna and umber mixed with a little black.

Thanks for the info. This box is utterly beautiful! (And I know that is a gross understatement, but superlatives fail me.) Your mould captured the details of your carving and everything translated perfectly to your casting. The way you applied it to the box makes it look like it's originally part of the box. Your eye for matching paint colors is incredible!

As a student of art conservation, I have been working with a few 19th century objects. I came across something that has given a HUGE hint as to what the actual box used in the show was. An old daguerreotype box! After a bit of searching around on google images, I came across this:

It's not exact, but I think I'm really getting somewhere!

Here's the image (cropping away some of the superfluous background, and lightening it a little to bring out more detail in the darker areas):

Idiotwithabox, if you "quote" this post in your next Update, the image will remain visible even after this set of comments collapse. (Or, you could save this image, and then just re-post it in your next Update. Your choice, but at least then the image will always be on top.)

Beautiful box, and some great info in your post. (You should really include some of what you said in your next Update so that stays on top as well, as your comment above will also collapse with your next Update.)
