How have you attached the quarter rounds?

I would have imagined it would be easier to attach in the corner made by two planks rather than the edge of one ?

Well it would, yes. But I want the posts to split at the corner so they can be stored flat to take up less space.  So I'll have to find a way to bolt the halves together at right-angles. Lift off hinges come to mind again.

The quarter-rounds are attached using a brad-nailer, so they could actually be pulled off without too much effort. I'm continuing my theme of not using glue, as to some extent I'm making this up as I go along. As it is the sandwich of planks is held together with screws from the back.

Today I worked on the opposite wall.

Here's a stack of timber I cut earlier:


I have a small but versatile collection of tools, including 3 circular saws - all somewhat blunt . I can recommend having sharp blades for beveling - it would save a lot of sanding.



Here are the beveled timbers laid out to check the fit:




With the timbers placed carefully, I just drew around the window openings and made a hole an inch larger in each direction.


I drew out where the holes for the panes needed to go and cut them out. Unfortunately I messed one of them up - as you can see in the photo above.

I think one of my central divider wotsitzs is off-centre... I'll have to fix that next time.

Despite not being top of my 'favourite Tardis' list, I must admit these construction photos have reminded me that I always liked the depth of the panels on this Box.

It's been a busy weekend. So much so that I was too tired to post an update last night.

With two posts and two walls, I figured it was time to make some doors. They're simpler than the walls if anything: an 18" by 78.5" piece of plywood (allowing for a little extra height behind the steps under the top sign), and an arrangement of 1"x4" timber with bevels. Oh and the window thing.

Here we go:



I offer up an off cut from the bottom rail of the walls to set the blade angle and width for the stiles.


And cut the 1x4 to match.


There's a vacuum attached to the saw, but the sawdust still gets everywhere.


I mark 12" sections of the double-beveled plank.


I cut them on the chop saw.


Then set the angle the same as the table saw and bevel the backs of them to fit against the rails.


Here's the stack. There are extras from the plank which will get used for the rear doors - or possibly for these doors if any of the cuts were bad.


Here I cut the plywood for the panel backing.


At this point I discover that I didn't in fact have the chop saw at the same bevel angle as the table saw. Fortunately it was too steep, so I was able to go back and fix it without throwing them away.


A better fit this time.


For the left door I cut out a larger rectangle of plywood, as for the windows to allow for the door sign.


And used the chop saw to cut the straight edges for the window panes, which I then finish with the jigsaw.


Here are the doors with a temporary door sign.

While I was staring meditatively at my work, I noticed a typo in the sign.


Oh well, it's just a temporary sign.

It's probably more just a matter of consecutive uninterrupted minutes. This weekend I got lucky...

I wanted to do a couple more things before posting the rest of the weekend's activities, and I got to those this evening.

I'm heading towards the stack shot, where the build is standing up. I always feel it's good to get any project to a point where it bears some resemblance to how it will end up as soon as possible. I find this helps me to not lose momentum.


First up, I attached the two halves of each post together with loose pin hinges. I have four of these left over from the previous build. At least four that I can find...


The post will hinge closed, although that's not actually terribly useful. The real purpose is to allow the posts to take much less space for storage.




To stack the build I needed somewhere I can assemble it and leave it, so I repaired to the Tardis...


I added a mounting batten and some lift-off hinges (also from the previous build - I ordered 2x too many by mistake .


The columns are pretty wide, so once the walls have been temporarily screwed to the posts, the combination will stand by itself. If you're brave/foolhardy enough.


I temporarily screwed a header across the doorway to hold it all stable.


I made a sign box and printed out a temporary sign - just to get something up there. I'll refine it later.


Today I went out and bought locks, and fixed up the steps under the sign box.
I temporarily backed the windows with a couple of pieces of plasterboard/sheetrock that happened to be lying around.

This is a little like clearing a narrow path to the other side. Now I have to go back and clear the rest of it.
There's no back, no base, no roof, no lamp... lots of stuff will need to be reworked, as I still want to be able to take this down and put it up without tools. But getting something that looks enough like the target is really sustaining for me.

I'm getting a nice Logopolis vibe seeing a police box inside your console room. Great stuff! As its an additional box, have you thought about keeping it white, ala Mind robber style?...

Well my first Tardis looked like that for a while when I was texturing it.


And yes, the picture file name was "land-of-fiction".

I don't know how I'm going to texture this new one, because those handy spray cans of Homax orange-peel texture spray don't seem to be available back here in Blighty, and I'm not sure I'm up to using a powered sprayer...

I immediately thought "Logopolis" too.

I couldn't say for definite but Wilkinson's stocked the textured rattle cans but I don't know about 'orange peel' only remember seeing the rough stone type effect.

Looking great as usual but I'm disappointed to note there is no obligatory "TARDIS building step-ladder" in those pictures!

Ooh, I'd better have a look for those rattle cans.

I seem to remember B&Q used to sell those a while back. It looks like the stuff the 'Underhenge' stone Dalek was sprayed with if I remember correctly.

Well, I didn't get as far as I hoped to this weekend. Life's like that sometimes.

But I did get the rear posts done, and made up the side sign boxes - at least in their preliminary form.



The attachment is currently very simple, but may not stay that way...
Once the walls are attached you can drop things between the posts if they're held inside and out.
