Not a nitpick, just an observation--it's really interesting, how high-waisted trousers were in the 70s.

1970s? They were high-waisted in the 1870s as well! In fact, most of the trousers used for the Doctors' costumes (at least for Docs 1, 2, 4-8) were high-waisted, most of the time. It was the look the costume designers we're going for. Ordinary street trousers weren't anywhere near that high-waisted!

I first noticed this shopping for decent First Doctor trousers and vests at Goodwill.

One way to get around this is to get a pair that are too large (if you find ones with a nice houndstooth pattern). You can have someone take in the waistband a little, but it will give you the high-waisted look. It's also interesting to note that the Victorian/Edwardian trousers look was a baggy one, so a pair that are too large would fit that bill as well.

That said, it really does come together nicely. Your face is all wrong but you've got the mannerisms down so well that you pull it off quite nicely.

I know this feeling. I've still got my 9th Doctor haircut (a carryover from my military days), but if you look at my attempt at the 9th Doctor in my costume thread, you'll see that my face is all wrong for him. (I'm more of the Troughton look, which is a little bit of a bummer because Hartnell is my favorite Doctor. At least I've got Hartnell's hazel-colored eyes.)

But I agree, Russell; you've pulled this off very nicely, and you do look like you had way too much fun doing it! (Incidentally, which companion would your wife most closely resemble? I'm sure you could talk her into donning a suitable outfit so she could join in on the fun. Maybe then she wouldn't roll her eyes as much, and once she learns just how much fun it really is, she won't think "You really need to see somebody..." ;) :D ;D)

Brilliant!

OOH!  OOH!  Trump the "your midlife crisis is complete" comment and get her some Leela skins!

Oh wait.  Season 12.  Still...

Hi all,

As always, thanks for your comments.
I think it would be a bit of an ask to get the missus to try dressing up as a companion, although she does like dressing in a vintage style with a bit of a Steampunk feel, so she is sort of into the whole dressing up thing a bit.
I think when she rolls her eyes & suggests I need psychiatric help, she is only joking (well, I hope she's joking.... :-\ If the men in white coats show up- I'm running!!)

Volpone: Yes, When I saw the pics together, I couldn't believe how high his trousers & jumper were- Simon Cowell lives!!
As you say, really shows how fashions change...

As for the face... It's not the 1st time someone has told me my face is all wrong!!...well, I'm not quite sure I'm so dedicated to the cause that I'd try plastic surgery, so I guess I'll just have to stick with the mug I've got! ;)

Dino: I think your 9th Doctor cosplay looks great- It's immediately obvious who you're doing!

Best regards to all,

Russell

PART 8....   SEASON 13

  21.jpg      22.jpg

Hi all,

We now move on to my favorite season for Tom's clothes.
I think Volpone was absolutely right when he said that this is where they really nailed Tom's look, with the long coat, cravat & waistcoat- Sheer perfection!

Interestingly, Tom doesn't jump straight into the frock coat look.
In the 1st 2 adventures of season 13, "Terror of the Zygons" & "Planet of Evil". he still has his red hacking jacket but there are some distinct changes to the rest of the garb...
The check shirt is gone, replaced by a plain one, although it is still quite flamboyant with nice wide collars.
The green neckerchief is replaced by a cravat.
The argyle cardigan is replaced by a brown Prince of Wales check waistcoat.
Oddly, publicity stills seem to show marked continuity errors in these two episodes... The shirt & cravat seem to change colour regularly.
Sometimes the cravat it worm out, sometimes tucked in.
Possibly some of the stills were rehearsal shots & these errors were not carried over into the final production?
I'd have to rewatch those episodes again to see for sure,

Anyway, I'm going to look more closely at the shirt, waistcoat, cravat combo in a bit more detail in the next installment, but for now I just had to recreate a little change in costume Tom adopted for just a short period of time, but my Celtic ancestry meant I really couldn't leave this one out...

AHHHHVE  GORRRRRNE  A  BIT  SCORRRRRRTISH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope you enjoy the pics as much as I enjoyed getting the costume together & posing for them.

Next time:  Shirt/ cravat/ waistcoat.

Till then,

Thanks for reading.

Best regards,

Obviously I don't know the 1-2 regeneration scene but there's at least an effort to keep the costume similar and imply regeneration is just making the person (mostly) young again.  They skipped a regeneration scene between 2 & 3, but when they had 3 regenerate into 4 it seems (and I've heard) that they made an effort to make Tom Baker look a bit like a younger Jon Pertwee.

Which is a ways to go to get to that I could buy you as a 5th Doctor.  The face is different but not completely different.  And the mannerisms are down.

On another note, do you have more on the publicity/test shot with the brown coat?  Those are definitely Prince of Wales checked trousers.  I thought he didn't wear any [what we Americans call] plaid pants until well into Key to Time, when he'd stopped wearing a tie and a stand-up collar and didn't ever button the vest.  (Whoops, "waistcoat".)  If I were a betting man, I'd say those are Baker's personal trousers.  The flared bottoms are much more 70s than most of the costume trousers they put him in.

Volpone:

Thanks for saying you could see me as a no 5, as at the time he was the youngest incumbent Doctor.
All those baths in oil of Olay must have worked!!

You are absolutely right about the trousers in the publicity shot. They are grey check with turn ups, much smarter than his usual baggy tweeds.
The general consensus among those in the know is that they are his own trousers. Tom often used his own gear in photo shoots & just bunged the coat & scarf over the top.

I thought I'd go into a bit more detail as to how I achieved my Scottish look.

Because many of my photos are recreating images from the series, I often need to use props to make them work. But I'm not spending a lot of time & money on items I'm only going to use once.
So, the criteria for these props is that they have to be quick, easy, cheap &, above all- FUN!!!

The scottish garb is a case in point.

Real Tam O Shanters are not cheap, so I bought a joke "see you Jimmy" Tam O Shanter from a fancy dress shop (£3)- complete with the orange hair!

I unpicked the hair, & added a hat band, which was just a cardboard strip covered in tartan material gleaned from a shirt bought from a charity shop for only £2 & stiffened with a wire band fashioned from an old coat hanger.

The feathers were from an old feather duster I had knocking around & the badge is just an old beer bottle top squashed flat & glued on.
(Got to find some use for all those empties, eh?!)

Hat.jpg

The scarf was also procured from a charity shop for £3, so the whole lot only set me back £8.  :D

A word on the coat: The coat Tom used in season 12 & "Terror of the Zygons" is really an odd one. It has no fastenings or any decorative features at all. In fact, It's just an oversized baggy mess.
I'm so glad they ditched it in favour of the sleek frock coat look.

There was no way I was going to spend any time or money trying to find an accurate version, so I just used an old raincoat, which does the job just fine.

Hope some of you find this useful or interesting.

Best regards,

Russell

Hi all.

Hope you are well.
As always, thanks for your comments & interest.

PART 9.... SEASON 13 Cont.....

SHIRT/CRAVAT/WAISTCOAT.

"The Pyramids of Mars" is where Tom really nails his best look.

Let's start the breakdown....

This is one of my favorite pictures that shows what Tom wears under the coat & scarf...
29.jpg

(Okay, so I know It's from series 14's Masque Of Mandragora, but let's not nitpick!!)

It's one of my all time fave pics. I just love the way stuntman Terry Walsh is standing next to Baker, dressed as him.
He looks like a cosplaying fan who has sidled up to his hero for a quick photo opportunity!

So, firstly Tom starts wearing a Victorian style shirt with a stiff upright collar. I approximated the look with a formal wingtip collar shirt. You can get these pretty cheaply if you rummage round the charity shops.
30.jpg

You can get cravats pretty easily from vintage shops or online, but I wanted to see if I could create something myself. I bought a couple of red felt scarves from the charity shops & cut them into shape. Tom sometimes wore the cravat out, sometimes in. I found I needed to make two in order to get the look right for each one.
Number one I wear out in a bow shape, the second is worn in, almost like a loosely folded tie:
31.jpg

The beauty of felt is that if you cut it carefully, it doesn't fray, so you don't need to stitch the edges.

So, this is cravat one, tied as a bow & worn outside:
32.jpg

This is cravat two, tucked into the waistcoat.
BTW: This is the first waistcoat I got. It does have a checked pattern, but it very subtle & from a distance it just looks plain brown..
33.jpg

Very dapper, even though I say so myself!
34.jpg

Add a coat & scarf...
35.jpg

And the hat. I'm pretty happy with how It's turning out...
36.jpg

People spend a lot of time & money trying to get an accurate look for the waistcoat, which was brown with a strong Prince Of Wales check design.  I found this one on Ebay. It's not 100% accurate, but good enough for me. I have seen many cosplayers using exactly the same waistcoat, so others must agree!
37.jpg

That's all for this installment, next time I'll be talking frock coats.

Thanks for reading,

Best regards,

Russell

I was lucky enough to find a genuine prince of wales check waistcoat that I wear pretty much all the time.
Vest.jpg
(pardon the clashing fabrics, I'm a huge fan of visual contrast) It's a little bit too big for me, but some creative cinching and tucking mostly hides it. It sadly isn't velvet, but what can you do? Everything's a tradeoff.

I haven't seen Pineapple Express, so I'm unsure if that's a compliment. I'm going to assume it is and go from there.

I've got the same one, Russell! It's hanging on my hatstand. I found mine on Amazon a few years ago, on sale for something ridiculous like $10, and for once still available in my size! (It's the only thing in my old 4th Doctor outfit kit in my size - outgrew everything else, or the moths had gotten to it all. It was intended as a start for the rebuild. Maybe one day I'll get back to that.)

Don't feel too bad, silence. Unless I'm wrong, the one Tom Baker wore wasn't velvet either. (I think that came later with his Season 18 waistcoat.) Fabric-wise, his looked mostly wool, or cotton, or some blend that looked like those other fabrics.

I love this breakdown, Russell! (Somewhere I've got a pattern that a friend made for a cravat and if I can find it in these ever-growing "Who" folders of mine I'll post it. It was intended for use with the 8th Doctor outfit, but it should serve well for both. A cravat is a cravat after all.)

That is a nice looking waistcoat.
Love the check shirt, too.

And of course Dino is quite right, Tom's waistcoats were wool/cotton, up until series 18 where we get the red swirly pattern job.

I hadn't heard of Pineapple Express either & had to google it... Looks interesting...might give it a go.

I'm currently hard at work creating props for my Series 13 full costume photo shoot.
I just love working with cardboard. It's so cheap & easy to work with & lots of fun!

Here's a taster of things to come.
Shouldn't be too difficult to guess what these are...
