OK, so I have a question about a Doctor Who matter but it doesn't really warrant an entire thread so I thought perhaps it could be the start of a thread where anyone can post their questions and hopefully get them answered by other members. No mockery and no judgements, even the most knowledgeable Whovian has gaps in their knowledge that others don't.

So, kick off with my stupid question, a thing that has been driving me mad since I became a TARDIS Bulders member lol...

The name Brachaki comes up a lot on this forum but I don't think I've ever heard it spoken aloud... so how is it pronounced?

Bra-cha-key?

Bra-ka-key?

Bra-chak-eye?

Bra-kak-eye?

Depending on the origin of the name the "ch" could be pronounced k, or a more Klingon sounding noise. Similarly the "i"  could go a couple of ways. The "Bra" might be more of a "Bruh".

Of course there's a big difference in how people pronounce the same person's name, I usually go with how the person themselves pronounces it but as I say I don't think I've ever heard it spoken let alone by the man himself.

Does anyone know?

There was some discussion of this in another thread somewhere (and if I could find it, I'd link to it :P). It was a while ago: a few years, at least. But the actual spelling is Brachacki - born Kazimierz Piotr "Peter" Brachacki in Dębieńsko, Poland in 1926. (His name has been spelled both ways - the IMDB has him listed as "Brachaki", though when you look through his credits every single credit says "as Peter Brachacki". Ergo, this leads one to believe the man knew how to spell his name, and that's what he told the production staff how to spell it for their show credits.)

As to the pronunciation, the only thing we have to go on is a magazine interview with his wife who said it was pronounced "Brah-hats-key"... and again I can't find that fracking thread where this was discussed, in which it gave his wife's name, and the name of the magazine. (Having Polish cousins on my mother's side of the family I can see this pronunciation as being correct. That said, all we really have is Brachacki's wife's say so, and that's good enough for me. She was married to him after all, and it became her name, too.)

And as always, I'm open to being corrected if I'm wrong.

Peter Brachacki's widow was interviewed by Graham Kibble-White for DWM. I asked Graham this morning how his (Brachacki's) surname should be pronounced. This is his reply:

Bra-hat-ski

Peter's widow has retained the female form of "Brachacka" (pronounced Bra-hat-ska) as her surname!

So, there - from the horse's mouth - you have it: Brachacki = Bra-hat-ski:)

That's what my Polish friend told me a few years ago, but for some reason I remember it without the t : Bra Ha Ski.

Could be my poor memory, could just be a running together of letters in speech. :)

Funnily enough, I'm seeing her next weekend again, as I'll be in Vienna :)

Topics are cheap: if a question's worth asking, it's worth a topic - they're easier to combine than they are to split - particularly when the conversation meanders around.
Glomming them all together here will just guarantee that most other people won't find them.

It's possibly still not too late to split this topic and put the relevant parts in the correct places before people start responding to multiple questions in the same post.

Well this has taken off since I went to bed last night.

Thank you for the answers RE my original question, I consider it thoroughly answered.

I apologize if this thread does cause problems for the mods but as I said originally I wasn't sure my question alone warranted a thread all to itself.

Thanks for filling in the blanks for me, Tony, re: which mag interviewed Mrs. Brachacki. And I see I wasn't that far off with the pronunciation (different phonetic spelling, almost same sound when you say it). What I was not aware of is the feminine form, Brachacka. That is news to me so thank you for adding more info to my knowledge base. (I'll keep this one as a text file so I won't forget it.)

Well said, Crispin. Also if I may add to this is the topic's Title. No offense intended, CH, but a title of "Random DW questions" can open the topic to a can of worms. Before you know it, things will look like a Facebook page as more questions that are totally unrelated to the one that started the topic come rolling in, and so do the responses.

No apologies needed, CH. As Crispin says, "if a question is worth asking, it's worth a topic", so, too, would I add "and that topic is worth an appropriate title" (i.e. "How do you pronounce Peter Brachacki's last name?" or something like that would have been a better title as it would have kept the topic on that one subject). And since there really is no place on the Forum designated for 'miscellaneous' questions, I think you were right to place yours in the Off Topic News Section.

Again, I agree. Cardinal's question is in the right place here, but T@RDISman550's (that really is hard to type!) questions should go into the TARDIS Workshop Section, since the questions are not related to a build, or discussing reference images, and not really related to a virtual build but to how certain New Series TARDISes differ from each other (one topic), while the question of which TARDIS has the least amount of references should be in another. (So there is certainly some splitting to do.)

HI all & no disrespect to anyone with my comment, nor am I trying to be a pain in the butt for anyone, but just reading through this post, having 2 questions not related to each other (one about pronouncing a name, the other about TARDISis), it did get a bit confusing, so if there is anyway of splitting them, it would make it easier to follow, thank you.

Thanks to all in answering the questions as well, the name was an interesting one I was also wondering about too, so again thanks.

Looks like it's been taken care of, Chris. (And it is much easier to follow the topics this way.) There is a good rule of thumb for the build diaries: one build per Topic, one Topic per build; this can be found in the link up-thread in Crispin's (Scarfwearer) post. I think at least part of that could be expanded to the rest of the Forum: one Topic per thread (i.e. if someone starts a Topic and asks a question about the dimensions of the Newbery TARDIS, then no one should post a question in that thread asking about the dimensions of any other version of TARDIS - that should be for a different Topic; or if someone starts a Topic and asks about a name - anyone's or anything's - no one should post a question in that thread asking about the difference between a "Remembrance Dalek" gun and a "Genesis Dalek" gun, etc.).

I like how this is now with the Brachacki TARDIS: keeping the man's name with his design so the info on how to pronounce his name is not lost to future readers and members, only to have the question asked again (since it's been asked twice - one of them being lost among the other discussions, and this one). Now if anyone has that question in future, the answer will be here in a dedicated Topic. (I guess this was a better idea than mine... about it being in the right place in "Off Topic News". I guess one can't always hit that nail on the head.)

Also Tony's info on the feminine form of the name I found very enlightening, and that's something I would not want to see lost to time when the former "Off Topic" topic was auto-deleted after so many months.

Just to throw the cat among the pigeons, I've just watched PB's video about comparing one of his models to the CO version and he pronounces it "Br-hoski", because he had a Polish teacher with the exact same name who said it that way. Of course how the man himself pronounced it was the correct way, but it is interesting to note that "ch" in Polish is obviously pronounced as a soft "h" as in "horse" rather than "ch" as in "church".

I think this might be my first post on the new forum!
