I was wondering what to use for a built-in monitor on my console, I currently have an old car stereo screen that isn't that good (it does the job but I'd like something a bit better).
Any recommendations?

If you already own one, a smartphone or a tablet would be the best option. You can play sound effects, show animations, etc etc. Computer monitors are also a good option, but that would require you to have an actual computer hooked up to it in order to do anything.

Or if you wanted a "static" monitor, you could print out a suitable image, glue it to your console and glue a piece of plastic over the top (you could even modify this so that you can switch out the images whenever you want.)

I guess it depends on your budget and needs

14th's suggestion of an image printed out and displayed under plastic is fine for very low budgets (and in fairness, big budget movies use this technique too!), maybe stick a bulb underneath and viola - instant illuminated monitor!

You could also use one of those "digital picture frame" thingies. You can stick load of graphics on it via memory card and job done.

Or and old PC monitor and appropriate hard and software and the world's your oyster so to speak.

Obviously there are loads of options in between depending how you will use your console, maybe a piece of green card in the shape of a monitor will work best if you are planning fan-films etc?

I think the prof could use any of the suggestions mentioned above as they are all brilliant. (Even the 2013 console has an HD computer monitor - or possibly TV connected to a computer via HDMI cable - under the oval screen in the console panel. If you look closely at some of the reference images we have, you can actually see the rectangular shape below that oval opening. Heck, even the big budget 'Trek' (pre-2009 reboot) used them in all their films and TV series.)

And for a fan film, using a piece of green card for some chromakey FX can still be done with an actual monitor (or digital photo frame) in place. Pre-loaded images on either can be set to scroll through a slide show when things in the TARDIS are going normally - well, as normal as things can go inside a TARDIS. If you need to have some 2-way visual comms with someone, cover over the monitor screen with the green card, and you've got the foundation to insert the VFX for that comms scene.

The possibilities are, really, almost endless.

Hooking up "an actual computer" to a standard monitor or TV needn't be a huge deal; something like a RaspberryPi will fit really easily under the console (it's slimmer than the monitor itself) and you don't have the level of ventilation or space problems that you'd have with a PC.  And it costs less than the screen itself.

That said, I don't know where I'd start with that; there will be lots of things to e.g. play simple slideshows of images that you could set to come on when it boots up, but you may need to be more of a Linux person than me (or have a friend who is) to get it set up.

Thx I think I have an "oldish" monitor that I could use plus I also have a raspberry pi just lying around the house so I'll try that idea! Thx once again to all of you for the ideas
