Tony, many thanks for the info and observations.  I'll be squirreling that away along with all the rest... in readiness for my long over-due build.

Wow, Tony, this is above and beyond what I expected!  I was just hoping to get the height to width ratios right.

I aim to please - you're very welcome Bob. (I may call you Bob, mayn't I?)
(I'll add an overhead view to the  plans in the TY-J article in the next few days.) :)

Yes Tony, you may call me Bob, lol.  I'm looking forward to the overhead view. Oddly enough, I have a spare Fresnel lens left over from when I built the NST, and it would be awesome to use it on a TYJ.

Just to let Bob (& anyone else who might be interested) know that a diagram showing the overhead view of the TY-J Tardis and dimensions for the roof, lamp, sign-boxes and steps over the doors have now been added - as promised - to http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=6965.0 (page six).

Happy building Bob!  :)

Would you believe that I was working on that bit this morning, and low and behold just as I get stuck and post the solution! Thank you, Tony, as always. I'm messing around with the window frame/lattice things. I am going with 6mm for the surrounding frame and 12mm for the bars in the middle but to my eye it looks a little thin.. This makes each of the six panes of glass 170.5mm by 83mm. Does that sound right or do I need to go bigger?

tony farrell

Hi Ian - long time, no speak - I hope all is well with you?

I'll draw up a diagram for the window frames in the next day or so... In the meantime, allowing for variations (i.e., the TY-J Tardis was extremely unlikely to have been made to exacting standards), I make each window pane 166.5 mm tall by 75 mm wide. This means that the central cross rail is 20 mm tall and each of the two vertical dividers either side of the middle panes are 20 mm wide.

I make the window frame 5 mm thick which reduces the depth of the panel recess from 25 mm to 20 mm - i.e., the window frame is mounted inside/on top of a 25 mm deep panel recess.

Hey Tony! Yeah, all is well thanks. I have been off the grid whilst getting Uni stuff sorted out for next weekend, but as I have finished work I find I have some free time to work on some unfinished projects like the TY-J and the Newbery. Your revisions are astonishingly accurate and everything seems to be fitting together beautifully :D Am I right in thinking that the TY-J was ever so slightly rectangular? the base is 1370mm x 1370mm but the posts (from edge to edge) are 1305 x 1300mm. Am I reading that correctly on your plans?

Glad all is okay and glad you're finding time for the important stuff in life such as Tardis building!

Yes, you are interpreting my plans correctly. The box at Cardiff appears to be very slightly rectangular - I think the slightly wider elevations on the sides with the doors can be explained by the slight gaps either side of the doors to allow for the hinges. I suppose - for virtual builders such as yourself - this slight difference of 5 mm could be ignored.  :)

I wondered if it was the gaps around the doors... Actually I quite like modelling those little quirks and bits of asymmetry :D

Tony, no hinges on the Pull to Open door.  It doesn't open?

Whilst it was fitted with a handle, it didn't actually open until Delta and the Bannermen (and that was the "All Calls" version).

The diagram was intended to show the window's and panel's dimensions - I can add a handle if that is felt necessary.

(Edited - handle added!)

Sorry to bother Tony, do you have a signshop-ready PDF of this PTO door sign?
