If anyone manages to get access to a roundel anytime soon I'd be interested in any details on its profile. A cast from it, cut it in half and photographed edge on would be perfect. Or use one of those contour pin-arrays you can get for matching mouldings. Even a 45 degree angled photo of each side and a max depth measurement would be a help...

Your wish is my command - I'll get the camera out later.  By the way, the surround ridges are really shallow, sometimes you can hardly see them if the casting is translucent - but, obviously, it shows up better if painted.

Okay, here we go again - steady yourselves now as "The Great Roundel Debate (tm)" is back, this time with a vengeance.  Grrr - I can sense you all quaking in your boots.

Over all diameter = 19.5"
Edging = 3.25"
Interior "plate" diameter = 13"

Here's a sectional cut through sketch, on the front of my Water Bill.  Well, what other use are they?

Here's a full on view:

And a close up on the edge detail:

Enjoy.  Rulers, measuring sticks and scarves - cm on the front, inches on the back - at the ready!

Oh baby! Sweet! Lungbarrow will be in heaven ;)

May I ask tough, what is the distance between the very edge of the roundel and where the contour begins? There appears to be a discrepancy between the drawing and the pic...?

What vintage is that roundel?

And what should one make the former out of - clay?

To answer the first bit if your question, the bit that I haven't drawn is just the edge of the mould - that bit should be cut off as it's not part of the final Roundel.

The vintage, well, this one is only a few years old, but it came out of the original mould, which coincidentally I own.  The moulds were created for the 4th Doctor's secondary console room in Masque of the Mandragora, when the BBC went back to the white walled room, they used this type of Roundel cast right up until The Greatest Show in the Galaxy.

Clay would make an ideal former.

I assume these were produced with *gulp* fibreglass? :o
Either I'm going to have to bite the bullet (outside) or use some creativity here....
I ain't going to be selling any, but I might have few left over that I could give away. Don't hold your breath though.

EDIT: I have heard from some dalek builders that clay can shrink or crack. I'll probably be using fixing plaster or possibly even water putty to make the mold - you can get either in Home Depot.

Does anybody know the diameter of the roundels used from the inception of the show until season fourteen those used in the main door? Does anyone have plans for the tardis interior as it was seen in the first season?

I thought I would post this here, as it seemed the appropriate place.
cheers. Time Rotor ;)

believe it or not, that is on the screen almost ( not quite) to full size scale.
put a piece of paper on the screen and trace it, you have your stencil! well its a start!

great reference there. 8-)

I've always wondered how they made the former for the roundels. Was it routered out of wood? Anyone know?

I suspect there was a template cut into wood that was turned on a spindle and carved into wet clay...

I'm sure Purp can confirm or deny. He is the master at knowing weird and unknowable stuff like this :)

Looking at the mould, your assumption would be correct, I guess.  There is a very faint dowel mark right in the centre which suggests that it was spun - and I've always assumed it was either plaster or wet clay as the full roundel does appear to have a few "wobbles" on it in a few places.

By the way Time Rotor - did you make the square metal console room door handle (on the console room door) that I spied in your recent auction?  I've only ever seen two before outside WHO, so they were obviously commercially available at some point.

I (not so) recently had cause to try this myself for making my own roundels:

It's not unlike making a dalek dome.

The roundels on the main door are of a different depth to the ones on the opposite side aren't they?

I just did some calculations for the hatstand based on the surrounding roundels and it came out as 7 ft. 3 3/4" does that sound right?

If anyone is interested the season 16 walls come out as being about 9 ft. -3/4" tall with 4.5x 19.5" roundels separated by 4 1/4" and raised 2 1/2" from the floor, height extenders not included.

This is very quick so double check but I thought I'd share what I had.

I think the vertical spacing looks more like 2.5".
roundel-ratio.jpg

I get a 22" vertical pattern repeat by doing this, for a total wall height of 102" (8'6"). At this resolution, a pixel is more than ¼", so there is some margin for error...

I'll try to draw up a schematic for this at some point, though if anyone else wants to have a go at that, then the more the merrier!

(9' is exactly the height of the walls I built for my TARDIS, but my roundels are an inch too large, as I didn't have a reliable roundel diameter when I built mine. My pattern repeat was 24", so my roundels are also spaced slightly too far apart vertically for their size.)
