I'd like to know where she got the idea that the keys could only be destroyed in a volcano in the first place!
I don't remember the Doctor ever mentioning anything, but, then there are a lot of places he's mentioned taking companions too, that we don't get to see.
Which is a shame as they sound like they would make exciting places to see & good episodes, relaxing ones for a change!

She already asked to go to the volcano and started to collect the keys before picking up and attempting to use the patches.

Both really great points. Maybe Clara figured that would be one way of disposing of the keys so the Doctor could never retrieve them. Toss them in a river? Or the ocean? A deep ravine? The Doctor has enough connections (such as UNIT) to help him retrieve the keys from places like that. But once they're melted in a volcano? (They could be melted down in a forge as well, but a volcano would melt them far faster.)

Another good point. But then with this sort of plot device, you'd think it would have been mentioned at some point in a previous episode. (Like with the whole "Bad Wolf" thing, or the crack in the universe - maybe not mention the volcano as often, but at least once to put it out there, and then show it again in a very brief flashback just before the key tossing begins.)

Now this one I completely agree with! We did get to see the Eye of Orion ever so briefly in "The Five Doctors". The 11th Doctor mentioned it while rigging a firewall around the TARDIS Matrix at the end of "The Doctor's Wife". Having an adventure there would be something fun, and possibly relaxing. Definitely in the mood for something lighthearted after this Series 10 finale!

CLARA: You told me once what it would take to destroy a Tardis key. That's what's so good about lava. All seven. From all of your hiding places.

DOCTOR: Yes.
CLARA: Good.
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.

Ah. Thanks for that info, Nate. (Looks like I've missed another of those little tidbits. :P)

Well... not always. "Voyage Of The Damned" wasn't exactly lighthearted. Neither was "The End Of Time, Part 1" (or "~Part 2" for that matter). "The Time Of The Doctor" was also a bit on the dark side. Granted those last two (or three if you count "~Part 1" and "~Part 2" separately) one would expect to be on the dark side as they dealt with a fatal injury to the Doctor, causing a regeneration. I would expect this coming Christmas Special to be on the dark side as well, considering the Series 10 finale cliffhanger and knowing the Doctor will regenerate at the end of this year's Special.

I was referring to a regular during-a-series episode being a lighthearted one... where no one dies, no one gets maimed. One episode set in a place like the Eye of Orion, where you've got the 'Doctor Who' equivalent of "The Trouble With Tribbles": just one big fun episode that makes you smile, and laugh, from start to finish.

Quick question - will coke strip a key down to the brass?

And Liz Sladen showing off her own TARDIS key, which appears to be the Baker 1 key. (The rounded ends on the arm appear to be camera flash reflections to me)

Sorry to double post but just noticed...

RE the rounded ends, if you zoom in and look at the shadow it casts on her neck the ends do appear rounded.

I think you're right, CH. I just zoomed in (and sharpened the image), and those "round" bits are too symmetrical to be glare from a flash. Also, the glare from a flash wouldn't cast a round shadow on someone's neck; it would cast the shadow in the shape of the thing it was illuminating for the photo. So if the shadow has a round spot on it (which it does), then it's a good bet the end(s) of the key's arms also have a round bit on them blocking the light from the flash.

Well... a glass of cola (either one) will totally dissolve a decent-sized steel nail within 24 hours. (What does that tell you about what it does to your insides?!) So I think it would certainly strip a thinly-chromed key down to the brass. You'd just have to keep an eye on how long you keep the key in that edible toxic waste to avoid it totally dissolving your key!

Well... I've had a go at trying to correct the perspective on that image of Liz Sladen's key.... and I just can't make it match any of the known Doctor keys. You get the width to match and that top part turns into an elongated diamond rather that a square. Or.. get that to match and the ankh/spade shape is way off.
Here, it's easier if I show you. (I've included the other ankh/spade keys for comparison)

Oh, and those dots don't match at all.

That's because the dots are located on the back, the pattern you are seeing is of the front.

Although they don't match the dot side either particularly well.

That is because the middle key in Terrasolo's picture is a replica of the one handled by Elizabeth, which was an early version of the key used by Tom Baker- as John Pertwee kept his original. The first Ankh-style key used by Tom was a fairly inaccurate copy of the one handled by John. Elizabeth kept her key when she left the show.

(Please correct me on any of this if I am wrong, its 2 am)

Cardinal Hordriss

I don't think Elizabeth took one of the used props when she left as the one in the picture bares little relation to the ones seen on screen, it was perhaps made as a parting gift.

Having said that... after noticing what I did about the key being held by Elizabeth in the photo I went back over the other pics and I wonder if this one from Robot is it. If you zoom in it appears to have the rounded ends to the cross bar and the squashed diamond.
