THE TWELFTH DOCTOR:
"Dark Water"

Series 8 not only gave us a new Doctor but also another new TARDIS key. In "Dark Water" we were clearly shown both sides of this new key on screen, which revealed that the head details were identical on both sides. This new key shared the same body shape with the ERA 1E key from Series 1 - returning to the one stop look - and even shared similar head marking aside from the lack of a raised circle around the keyhole loop. After another internet search I found a replacement cylinder that came with a set of key, both made by Hiatt Hardware, and the keys were an identical match to the Capaldi TARDIS key on both sides; Identical body details with no words, letters or numbers at all, exactly as we had seen on screen. Unfortunately, there are no identifying numbers for these keys, just the name brand.

While it seems that the Twelfth Doctor never really changed the style of his TARDIS key, not even with an added keychain, he did have several keys of his own; seven in fact. In "Dark Water" Clara stole all seven of the Doctor's TARDIS keys, including his and her own personal keys, from various places in the TARDIS to hold him hostage to her demands.

In Series 9's "Face the Raven" we can see that the Twelfth Doctor still used the Hiatt Hardware key, however in Series 10 the Doctor was not seen to use a TARDIS key at all.

In April of 2017 I had also discovered that Yale sells a replacement Rim Cylinder with the same keys as in the Hiatt set. Which should make finding them a bit easier.

Sweet Mother of Rassilon!! :o :o :o I think I just found my new favourite TARDIS Builders thread! I've been drooling over your TARDIS key infographics for years - little did I realise they were of your keys (I always thought they were showing the original props) The amount of research you have compiled here is outstanding! Thank you for taking the time to post it all here (this one deserves a sticky, could this be arranged with the Mods?)

90% of the images you've posted here I've never seen before (and in the case of the Classic Era props, barring the "ankh" and McCoy keys, I've never seen any of those images before.)

I'm on the hunt for some Yale-type keys as we speak, and the amazing research here has just made my search so much easier (my goal now is to amass replicas of each Doctor's TARDIS keys, as you have done with your infographics.)

Seriously, I don't think we can thank you enough for the marvel that is this thread. :)

Kind regards, The14thDr :D

Thank you for the kind words on both my infographics and this thread! I can't take all the credit of course as loads of research was on on the RPF, here, and other forums as well and Straker from the RPF deserves a shout out too. He and I did a ton of research together. But yeah, I glad that all that time and effort, and indeed my infographics, can be of help to others who may want to own a set of TARDIS keys.

I sometimes update the keys in my collection, when more information comes to light and or a better match etc. but if I do that I'll be sure to update the photo and the information.

Not too sure I'll be adding the 13th Doctor to the photo or any more companions in the companions thread. I may wait a couple of years before updating it again in that much detail. At least these can serve as a Classic to Moff era infographics.

Given that even the costume hasn't been finalised (and they had to photoshop a Tardis), I wouldn't assume anything on this key, it's probably one they had in the props box that wasn't being used.
Mind you, it does give us a very clear look at how they've sanded it down to the brass, and with that close-up could you possibly match it to one of the previous keys?

I was only trying to be nice.

I do like the brass look. I don't think it will have been sanded, more likely an old brass key, with any logo etc. on the side we don't see, I've a few like that. Got my boss to remove the logo on one, he did a good job.

I for one think there's a good chance this could be the new TARDIS key (or one of them anyway - the props vary almost as much as the Doctor's face! Like Angelus said, "it's probably one they had in the props box that wasn't being used". At the end of the day, the TARDIS key is just a plain old key, so I reckon most of the time they just grab any old key to use for quick shots like this, where the key isn't actually shown doing anything. (As a little OT side-note, it would be cool to see the new Doctor go back to the "classic" ankh/spade style key, possibly updated for the modern series - kind of like the Daleks; same basic design, but new at the same time)

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to get those screengrabs for us Cardinal Hordriss; it's very much appreciated and keeps out reference material as up-to-date as possible. :)

I vary from preferring stylized keys and plain yale keys, it depends which era of the series I'm most into at the time but I'd let them use my key design for a small percentage of the merchandise prophets.

I am a fan of the 1980s Tardis. I purchased an old "new stock" lock and key.

I noticed the Yale Keys you have have the 1990's logo. Is it still possible to buy 1980's Yale Key Blanks?

Many Years ago, I came across an eBay listing for the remnants of a Police Box. The seller apparently was given the Light, Key and other bits from a box that was demolished. I do not remember any of the other particulars. Recently I came across these images on one of my hard drives:

I am sure these images will be of interest.
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

I used to waffle on this as well. And then "Journey To The Center Of The TARDIS" threw an idea into my head with the Smiths key (which is a real clock key, and one you can still find on e-Bay). It gave me an idea. I mean, sure that key was a perfect play on the fact that the Doctor always called himself "John Smith" (with few exceptions during Capaldi's run), and Matt Smith was the actor in the role at the time. But the idea that hit me was, why not have the Yale-type key for the TARDIS door lock, and the Spade/Ankh-type key for the console? You could have the best of both worlds!

As for the key in question in the grabs up thread, why not have the TARDIS key be a worn, maybe even a but tarnished brass key? After all, the TARDIS (Type-40, believed a Mark I) was a museum piece when the Doctor was young. As the 12th Doctor put it in "Deep Breath": "I'm the Doctor, I've lived for over two thousand years..." So how much older than that must the TARDIS be? Certainly something like that not only has some serious staying power, but has certainly been around the universe several times over. (If your car lasts more than its loan term, is its key still pristine chrome, or are parts of it already wearing down to the brassy parts? Now, imagine having used a key for as long as the TARDIS has - even given that the 1st Doctor is rumored to have replaced the original 21-position lock with a less complex one, it could have been "keyed" the same as the original. Even with the 3rd and 4th Doctor having used a "special" lock and key - something the late 7th/new 8th Doctors tried re-using - going back to the Yale-style key for the long Last Great Time War, and beyond, that key has got to be quite worn.)

So a worn, tarnished brassy key would be a perfect fit for the TARDIS, no matter the Doctor using it. (Again, thinking of that old 1933 gangster car: how many people have used it over the decades? Same key, which has to be worn down to nothing but the brass by now.)

How does that sound, CH? (It lets everyone have the use of both style of keys at the same time: one for the main doors, and one for the console.)

Also, that was a great find with the lock and key, Nate! (Dare I ask where you found it?)

I keep thinking it would be cool to have something like those coloured rubber/plastic things you put over keys to help you differentiate them, but with a seal of Galifrey, or something on.

The problem with that backstory to the brass look Galacticprobe is that the key isn't made of brass, it can only be destroyed by something with the heat of molten lava and as well as its shape it is also coded at the molecular level for the specific lock. I do like the look of brass though. I also quite like the sanded keys with no detail on the head because there's something unusual about that plus however sophisticated the chameleon properties I'm not sure it would go so far as to have an ERA or Yale logo on it.

Okay... now you've got me thinking this key was made by Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom! ;D (And remember, that whole lava thing was "dream patch"-induced in Clara's head. We still don't know if that is really true, or just what that dream patch made her think.)

She already asked to go to the volcano and started to collect the keys before picking up and attempting to use the patches.
