Other Model Build Diaries / Re: 1/48th scale Tom Baker
Last post by Andrew Harvey - Mar 21, 2024, 01:13 am
You are quite right Wonderwheeeler. The centre line is indeed where you say. If you look at Tom Baker when he has his hat on a lot of that mop disappears. (See how squashed down it is when he takes it off sometimes). Often the hat is up away from his forehead so we can see his face. The hat is of course dimensionally transcendental, so even the Mekon could comfortably wear it. I ran into an anatomical anomaly on the hatless one, his entire head came out a slightly odd shape, Sometimes whilst sculpting the face spreads and after hours of working on it one fails to notice. Then you just say 'Hang it all! I'm not doing all that again!' The faces are about three and a half millimetres from chin to the top of the eye. So you can understand why a chap could run out of patience!
I do some monsters too. They are easy because nobody really has anything to compare them too! Except real monsters of course, they can always spot the mistakes!

 All the best

The face looks good and everything overall. But, I have learned that the typical human eye level is at about the center line of the head height, up and down. From art class. I am not sure there is enough room for the remainder of his massive cranium inside that little hat there(!)

I'd made the models already so on a whim I turned them into salt and pepper shakers and now we use them as our daily drivers.  They worked out surprisingly well...!

Anyway, I'm going to do a limited run of these if anyone's interested.

Note: They can't contain unlimited amounts of seasoning.  They're exactly this big on the inside.

Get them here.

Having successfully negotiated the upgrade to the raised beds, I had some time to myself and the sun was still shining. I brought out the base of the Tardis and removed the old wheels. I moved the new ones inward as much as I could so they wouldn't bash the sides, and then added a 1 1/2 inch skirt all around the base. I did leave a gap for the tow rope to go through at the front. They're glued in place for the moment, but I'll reinforce that with screws a little later. Still haven't decided if we're taking the Tardis to the Washington State Summer Con. I'd like to, but taking both Tardis and Dalek is soooo complicated.

Ha ha!A trip to Home Depot for unimportant things (ie, not Tardis related) reveals these 3 inch casters for only $11 each! I'll have to mount them in a little more if I'm going to have some kind of cover in front, but they'll roll better!

I love your concept art Andrew, I'm putting that on my list of prop builds, right next to the Cybermat complete collection.  :o When I started photoshoping, It looked like an Alien head without the pong eyes.

Overdue on the list was fixing a gap between the lantern base and the top of the roof (because my bolts and thread inserts weren't aligning anymore) by adding some depth to the bottom.

Pending full paint job now.

We aren't going to talk about my inability to measure twice and cut once...
