The Top Signs on the TY-J Mk I must have been replaced at some point then. In "The Leisure Hive" they've got a thin frame around them (with a bit of a recessed border as well), with either "dirty white" or pale grey lettering, and the background is a slightly darker blue than the TARDIS.

But then in the grabs from "Mawdryn Undead", the Top Sign boxes have thick frames around them - so much so that the frames almost touch the tops and bottoms of the lettering; the lettering has gone very grey, and the background is bluer than the TARDIS.

(I never liked the look of these sign boxes.)

And from what we've seen of the TY-J Mk II, they went back to thinner-framed Top Sign boxes, with slightly lighter lettering, and a background that was almost the same color as the TARDIS. (Either that, or they just re-used the old sign boxes from the Mk I as seen in "The Leisure Hive", with the signs from the "Mawdryn Undead" boxes with adjustments to the lettering color.) I wish I could find a good photo from that era, but what I've found so far is all so small they're not worth posting because you can't see much!

Dino, the way Purple has described the evolution of the TYJ sign boxes goes as follow:
The original box had the Police Box signs behind the beading in the sign boxes.  We know in Logopolis the original signs were swapped out with ones that were done up like the Newbery refit.  The original signs were then put back in for Season 19, but instead of being put behind the beading, they were put in front of the beading.

Note in this promo shot, the top sign on the left is the Logopolis model, but the one above the doors is the original.

Then for Season 20, when they did the refit of the box, they added the fascia to the sign boxes, probably more for aesthetics than strength or reinforcement.  For Season 23, with the Mk2 making it's debut, the Mk1 had the fascia removed to make the sign boxes like the Mk2, as the box was used for the outdoor filming of Mindwarp.  After that, the Mk1 sign boxes were left alone.

And here's a promo shot with McCoy when he was announced.  You can see how knackered the Mk1's sign boxes were.  Even the sign above the door is slipping out of place.

Looks like the hinges on the door have been re-drilled a few times as well.
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

That is true.  Considering how many times the box was disassembled and assembled, the fireberglass would wear out after time.

That was a pretty good looking box. Shame they painted it in such a.... boring shade of blue.

This box is the one in the Doctor Who experience.

Silver Nemesis:

It receives a repaint, a very light blue.

PDVD_054.JPG

A new door is added to allow for the in-bedded arrow. It has no door lock. I expect this was the reason for the repaint (since they couldn't match the original colour).

It seems that the door handle returned after it's absence in Battlefield.
