The Box at the junction of Lyon Street and Garscube Road, a little south of Garscube Cross - E8

Not sure of the date, but probably no earlier than the late 60s --

And tighter in on the Box --

Here's the position and area as shown on the 1951-1952 OS Map (PCB at center of map) --

The area has been cleared of most of the buildings. Lyon Street is no longer there, but the street opposite it (Sawmillfield Street) is. Here is about as close as you can get to a current POV shot in street view (Box was at the blank red pointer and the green arrow in the map inset) --

Can't see it from here, but behind the tree is this view --

One of the few buildings in the area (and the only one visible in the photo) that is still there.

Here is a view of the Box Site --

It was where the blank red pointer is, corresponding to the green arrow on the inset map view.

Found a colour photo of this Box taken about the same time as the B&W one (circa late 1960s) --

What a great Photo banzai......
Still strange seeing Red Police Boxes (even if the roofs are a more familiar colour!)  ;D

Oh, I agree - it's most odd indeed. I thought the same of the Blackwall Tunnel Boxes.

I think according to plumbly7/Mike's evidence the roofs were actually black - a tar/asphalt covering for weather proofing (as I had suspected). I note that earlier photos from the 30s through 50s on various Glasgow boxes show the roofs the same colour as the body of the Boxes, so they were originally all red as confirmed by the very faded red all over the http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=4688.0 in the 1949 colour photos, and the more vibrantly coloured http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=4673.0.

Even more odd was that the earlier Mark 2 cast iron Boxes were apparently light blue (as per the one found sealed in a wall). Not sure what colour the more ornate Mark 1's were, but think I remember seeing an original blueprint/plan of it from a Patent Book that showed it as red. Seems they couldn't make up their minds.  :-[
