After doing a few purely mechanical devices I wondered if a screwdriver might be made with organic material as the core.  I sketched up a capsule to hold organic matter like the Doctor's hand in the glass jar on the tardis.  The handle is first to lathe out....IMG_20150328_113252.jpg
This one is going to have a nutrient tank at the bottom to feed the organic parts.IMG_20150328_113325.jpg
A connecting ring and front end get lathed from larger stock.IMG_20150328_145556.jpgIMG_20150328_145630.jpg

I plan on using UV leds to fluoresce the inards.

This one is going to be interesting! I don't think anyone's tried this version of a sonic before. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out (and what it looks like when it's done!).

Good luck with the build!

A plexyglas tube and shroud  will make up the capsule for the organic materials.IMG_20150330_150141.jpgIMG_20150330_150226.jpg

The 3D printer  builds the internal spacers/bulkheads and the tiny brain for the core.

Very cool concept. I look forward to seeing the finished photos

A sonic screwdriver with a brain: that's thinking really deep inside the box (which happens to be blue and look like a Police Box, so that tells you just how deep inside you really have to go!). I like how the brain is green, since it's said that Timelords have green brains (those 'little green cells' ;)).

I also look forward to seeing photos of the finished sonic, and it's looking great so far.

A couple pieces of leather form the gripIMG_3387.JPG

The UV LED is more powerful than I thought in making the plastic brain glow.IMG_3390.JPG

I wanted to give it a sensory "face" so the handle has an audio port, Imagery for visible light, UV spectrum and Infrared, and a gaseous sampler (the nose).

I really love the look of this. It's really a great idea. I love the use of the UV LED to make the inside glow. Brilliant!!

Thank you!  These UV leds are really powerful and can cause things to fluoresce from meters away.  The ABS plastics used in the 3D printer (at least the neon colors) glow like El-wire under UV light.

How strong, exactly? I believe there are health and safety concerns with strong UV (skin and eye damage).

What's your battery setup look like for this one, Steve?

steve757

I imagine the wavelength of the UV is like that of a blacklight used in parties.....no danger....the led only uses 20ma of current.  The batteries used are three AAA inside a rolled piece of clear paper thin acetate to line the inside and prevent the batteries from touching the sides except for the neg terminal with the endcap spring and the pos with the brass paper fastener.
