That's something that bothered me for a while, when I first saw these pictures. The guys are (posed) looking at earlier TARDIS plans yet look at what they ended up with. Either they can't follow blueprints or they just threw those plans away and did what they felt like anyway. ;-)

DoctorWho8

Those were Purple's submitted efforts.  The pics of the model TARDISes are all his!

Ahhhh.... so what you're saying is, they looked at the plans after they finished construction of 2 boxes, only to go 'Ohhhh... is THAT what it should have looked like? Whoops.'

kiwidoc

As I understand it, they left awarding a contract for the construction of the TARDISes until the last minute, until Purple's firm could no longer do them.  They then built them in-house at the BBC using suitably modified and slightly iffy designs (sorry Ed Thomas, it's true even though I've grown to like them personally...) and later posed with Purple's photos and models for the making-of photos because they probably didn't have any other reference material apart from the plans they'd drawn.

Isn't that the New Series "Series 1 Mark I" box? (Bill (DoctorWho8), you've made a better study of the New Series boxes than I think anyone else. It seems like you can tell one Series 1 box from another just by sniffing the air. What do you think?)

Oh yes, def one of the first 4 ever, before the doors were remade to make the panels less square.   Hadn't seen that particular picture before though.

This could be one of the promotional boxes, which did have the "squarer" door panel insets.

Hard to believe that was the base color of blue. I wonder how they darkened it?

Even then, she's starting to show wear and tear.  Cheers for the photos. :)

why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.
