If I recall corectly the clasic demat/remat sound was something scrapeing a guitar/piano wire. After seeing some of the recent progress and info on motorizeing the time rotor I was wondering if one could install a system to rub said wire as the rotor moved. It dose't give you the big womp at the end but it might feel more 'authentic' than useing a recording.

And they deleted the lovely landing "BLOINK" sound effect - for some unknown reason.

Must admit I forgot about that...  ;)

Well the sound originated form sliding a key on a piano wire, but aftewards it was modified and tuned to get the right sound.  If you watch some of the documentaries they show them doing doing the key on the piano wire, it sounds nothing like the TARDIS and is in fact fairly grating on the ears.  While the sound of the TARDIS I find very soothing and melodic <lol>.

Well, they did copyright it as a piece of music instead of a sound effect.

most of the early sound effects were recorded percussive or merchanical sounds that were slowed down.

although i dont think the dematerializing sound was heard from the inside of the tardis. i bet that would get annoying on 4 hour flights across the universe..

oh you heard it inside whenever it took the fancy of the director. I can think of lots of occasions where you heard it inside the console room.

le d'oh ..  it only hangs about for the initial take off and landing.. i assumed it was groaning and moaning the entire flight..

that would be annoying ..

hah. but i bet as crispin or someone no doubt has figured out a way for a PC to play the sound when a lever is thrown on the console..

Indeed it can be done - it's best done using a digital I/O device, of which there are quite a few: switches and lamps on one end - USB connector and a bit of programming on the other.

I found in my console room that I wanted a good loud console room hum when people walk in (after a brief materialization noise), but after a few minutes it's pretty well intolerable coming from a 100W amp and 4 speakers hidden behind the wall panels, so i arranged for the PC to fade the sound to 'barely audible' over a period of a few minutes after you walk in. People usually made lots of interesting comments on first walking in but no-one's ever made any comment about the fading hum, so I suppose it's subtle enough... I suppose I'll have to update the software now to play the demat sound for the duration of a simulated journey - at least as an option... I built the embedded TARDIS simulator before the new series began.

There - that's probably way more than you wanted to know. :)

Quote from: willytron board=console thread=697 post=13773 time=1210868948You could hear it inside when the TARDIS took off and landed, but since the 96 tv movie and now in the new series, you constantly hear it when the ship is in flight.  The only occasion I recall in the classic series that this happend was the pilot episode - when the Doctor first abducted Ian and Barbara.

*This is when I become "Mr Sad Git"...*

It can also be heard on the "Five Doctors " Special edition DVD, but there is also an incorrect dematerialisation effect used when the Tardis arrives at the Capitol
