I've recently painted my pebbled panes yellow with glass paint, circa late 70s, early 80s props. But now I'm not so sure about it. Just as a matter of interest, what do you all think about the yellow paned window look? Yay or Nay?

It's frustrating, but we have to work with these constraints.

Weren't they back lit in Pyramids of Mars? (ok I know that was still the Brachaki prop)[/quote]
So they were!  :D I'd never noticed that before!

Now that it's too late, I think I'm starting to agree with you, Apprentice. Then again ...

I was watching Terror of t Vervoids today, and I feel a little better about my yellow windows. They're not bright yellow like the Newberry, they look more like they do in the above story.

i have the yellow panes, and i like the look of them.... just another interesting feature of the box, i guess. on the props i think they were fiber glass castings that "yellowed" over time, not as yellow as the panes i bought / made.  to dull down the yellow i dirtied them down when i weathered the box.

I don't know if the Newberry windows yellowed over time, they were bright yellow all the way through. In any event, I may have finally solved my endless pebbled glass dilemma once and for all (I've reglazed my windows in about four variants of pebbled glass, obsessing about the REAL thing!). I contacted the glass company TimeGirl used to aquire her glass, which looks great to me. They told me they had some in stock and would get back to me this week about a price to ship it to the Land of Oz ...

We managed to pick up the Newbery plans on Ebay for a silly amount of money.

According to them there were light boxes behind the windows that were painted grey,  it also mentions something called "hammered Cobex" instead of glass for the windows.
I would imagine "Cobex" was some type of perspex which wouldn't have been UV stable at that point in time - hence yellowing.

Apparently Cobex is some kind of acetate sheet.

Hmm, I don't recall the windows ever being back-lit until the new series came along (not counting the original Cushing movies). Perhaps they never did that bit.

Looking at the plans there are certainly elements that differ to the finished props - the bevel on the panels is shallower for example so the fact they didn't use the light box is no surprise.
As far as I can tell the BBC never really stuck to the letter with their Blueprints.
If they can be watermarked I will post parts of the plans here if that's okay

Not okay, unfortunately. As I understand it, the BBC have already stopped the guy selling copies of these plans, and the copyright belongs to the BBC. Even posting parts of them could get the forum into trouble. Talk with the staff by PM if you have questions about this.

Fair enough.

I obviously respect the wishes of the moderators and forum.

Having had a good play in the Newberry box back at Longleat in 83, I can't recall that the windows even let light through but maybe my memory is playing tricks.
