As of a couple years ago, Yale still made a short version of their Traditional Security series Night Latch/Rim Lock.

Full size version is/was the Model 77 with a backset (distance from center of hole for the lock cylinder to edge of door) of 60mm (2-3/8") as yours has, but the short version is the Model 706 with a backset of just under your desired 1-5/8" at 40mm (conversion comes out to a hair over 1-9/16" (would you believe 1-37/64"?)).

All other aspects of the lock are the same - comes standard with brass cylinder (5-pin) and with the Simplex PARA keyway as per Pertwee's Yale key and the new one as shown in the BBC publicity still with Billie (under wallpaper section - you can find it on the CBC website at www.cbc.ca/doctorwho - nice shot but the key is twisted around just a bit too far to be able to figure out the pin depths).

Body finishes available are brass and bronze enamel (the bodies are now made from cast aluminium under the finish, unfortunately).

This is all per their 2000 UK catalog, but hopefully still current and able to be ordered by your local locksmith if you can't find it at the discount home-improvement type stores.  Yale's are pricey, but generally worth it, certainly for our purposes.

Ah, TG, I've got an old brass penny-in-the-slot loo lock somewhere... I'll have to see if it's an ETAS. I've got just the loo for it if it is.

Banzai, no doubt you've tried attacking the thing with Photoshop -

- and I agree, you can't quite make it out! Half-close your eyes and you could make a decent guess at it, though.

No, haven't tried Photoshop yet, but probably will give it a try at some point.  Still, nowhere near the quality of the Pertwee shots from "Spearhead".  Can actually calculate 3 of the pins with good accuracy there, and approximate the other two.  The new series key from this pic would just be an educated guess, without much hope of walking up to the the old girl and slipping in.  ;)

I'll have to check the DVDs when I can afford them, to see what can be seen.  Of course, I still haven't even had a chance to see the series yet, being on the wrong side of the pond.  :'(

Back to locks

I got hold of a 40mm backset Yale traditional lock which will fit my TARDIS door perfectly (presuming I manage to cut the hole correctly)

This is the Yale 706 (old but unused, from ebay)

Ah, a very Tardis-y find.

I spotted a BIRD lock on a door recently which looked almost exactly like an ETAS (but with the word BIRD rather than ETAS, obviously). But a little browsing finds that:
1. Bird locks look different now.
2. Bird locks may not be of the same quality as Yale locks.

Back to the drawing board - I wondered madly about the possibility of polishing the brand name off a lock and etching ETAS in its place...to look like this:
myetas300.jpg
but it would be way too tricky...

"I wondered madly about the possibility of polishing the brand name off a lock"

Can't you find any locks without brand names on them?  The cheapest nightlatch I can find (the one that WalMart sells) doesn't have anything on it's front plate.

Oh, that would be good. I haven't seen a nameless lock; I'll have to browse whatever our equivalent of Wal-mart is...

The silly thing is that I've an Etas lock (that's a picture of it, above) but it seems sacrilege to use it outdoors!

Ok,  I just picked up a lock.  It's a Taymor Maximum Security Rim Night Latch (model #37-3010).  It doesn't have anything on the front plate.

It cost just over CND$10 from Rona (Canadian hardware/lumber chain that happily price-matched with WalMart).

If you're unfamiliar with WalMart, it's a big American chain that sells almost everything, has low, low prices and has questionable business practices (eg. when the staff of one store formed a union, they immediately closed the store - laying off the ~200 employees).

Didn't Wal-mart take over Asda not long ago?

Ironage, do you have the lock mechanism as well or just the key hole part?

Also Iroange, any chance of some dimensions of whatever ETAS lock parts you have?

Hmm... the idea of buying a cylinder latch at Asda is a little surreal...

Well, I'm delighted to have an opportunity to show off, so here's a picture of the other bit of my Etas latch!
myetaslatch.jpg
It bears a resemblance to the Crich one but it's not identical.

I'll go and take some measurements...
