I'm thinking about trying to build a scaled down version of the 2005 Series Tardis to use as a sort of DVD holder. The problem is I really, really don't know where to start. I'm not even sure if what to do is possible.

So, I'm here appealing to the Tardis Builders for help. Please.

Alright how to explain this. *Deep breath* Ok, scale. I know that the inside width has to be at least 19in (possibly 23in) in order to accomidate 2 side by side DVD cases and drawers to put them in. The actual requiements would depend on the actual design.

And, as far as that goes, I'm trying to make something that looks like the Tardis on the outside, but when you open the doors it looks more like a chest of drawers.

Sorry I'm not describing this very well, but as you can probably tell, I'm pretty lost.

Okay, last reply for now...

It seems that I didn't use a sheet of ply for the back of the doors/walls, I made the frames up by gluing them together then adding small pieces of mdf to the back where each panel goes.  I'm not sure what's holding it all together actually  :D

Use this layout, and in a graphics program, scale it up so that the area inbetween the doors in 19 in.

And then what...

It's a great diagram of what a finished Tardis should look like, but I really don't know what to do with it. It doesn't really tell me anything about what the pieces look like or how they're put together.

I think I really need an exploded view or something.

Not withstanding the (frankly, boggling) skills and experience of scale boxes from Purple and Archie which are well known by now, I have built a scale box of my own too and it might be helpful to you.  This was a couple of years ago and an exact 1/4 scale of the full size box so that I could film SFX but never got around to it...    :-[

This box would fit DVDs but probably not quite 2 levels of them - at the moment mine is full of sketches and notes from my build.  My build technique also entirely replicates the full size one in my workshop manual but here goes:

Figure out sizes needed (key items are base, height of posts, gap between corner posts, overall height).

Cut piece of wood to size for base, bevel edges if desired.

Cut posts to width and height and screw through base to attach them (countersunk holes)

Solidify this structure by attaching signboxes between the posts at the appropriate height.

Cut door details (stiles and rails) exactly as per fullsize (possibly without 22 degree bevel if limited equipment or fearful of fingers...)

Find a few pieces of ply offcuts which fit from post to post, mark the distance between posts on the wood and build up the walls/doors pattern on them.  Remove space for windows if desiring backlighting etc.

For dual opening doors,  cut the ply to fit.  Easier option may be to have both doors on one piece and pull front off in one piece to access insides.  I have 2 doors (and opening windows all around) so I added small hinges to door sides nd bottomso f windows with hot glue (mental note, use no-more-nails or equiv next time... hot glue melts in the sun!)

By this point you have a 3D mox with sides, doors, signs, but no roof.
Build roof in stages as per full size version, I used a slab of wood for 1st stage, then 4 balsa triabngles for slopey bits centreed around a solid cube of wood in the centrre which the light sits on.

Any help?

I have a pile of pictures somewhere but not sure if they'd tell you much more - might dig them out if you want me to.

Cheers, Glen

Good luck.

ps:  I built mine for almost free, only paid for hinges and light bulb - all wood and paint was lying and around from 1:1 build.

Some pics to illustrate my technique (no more right or wrong than anyone else's of course...):
