Well, here goes.

I will attempt to document my build here.

We started on June 24th, 2006

My friend Matt and I hit Home Depot and Lowes for the inital load of 2by4s, 4by4s, 1by3s, 1by6es and plywood (3/4 and 1/2) and bought a table saw at a discount tool place.

And then we spent the better part of the day assembling the table saw and figuring out our own building guide from the collection I'd amassed from surfing the net.

Tara,  just FYI on the table saw, please be careful.  I am not sure if you worked with one before?  This was my first time.  I made a couple feather boards which really helped me out.  Also, you should get at least one roller stand to receive the wood as you cut your long boards.  I'll post pics if your interested.  You can buy the the roller stands at Lowes for $20.00.  In my career, I have seen a lot of guys in particular lose digits/fingers on table saws.  Always, always watch your hands and especially when that blade is at a 45 or 22 degree angles, it's an optical thing and very easy to be in wrong place at the wrong time.  I hope you don't mind my words of wisdom on this topic!!

Oh, by the way, was Hardware Speciality Co. able to to find you a 6x6" Fresnel Lens?  The one they shipped me was 5 1/2 (diameter) x 5 3/4 (height).  If yours is really 6x6, let me know and send me the product number if you don't mind -- thanks  ;)

Also, if your using photobucket for your pics, when you select your pic for your avatar, make sure your using the URL address and the size is no bigger than 100x100 - FYI.  I noticed your avatar was not loading up.

Happy building and I hope you feel better,
Jon

Dear Jon,

Don't worry!  I'm under adult supervision!  :)

My friend Matt is a woodworker.  He's doing all the serious stuff and my husband and I are assisting him.

Our second build day was July 3rd.

We got the big pieces of plywood cut down, glued and screwed together.  We also cut down a 2by4 for the edging.

Here's Matt (the tall fella in the tie dye) and my Husband David actually working.  I'm sitting in front of the swamp cooler with Matt's wife Susan.

This weekend we're hoping to finish the base, start on the uprights and a couple of sides.

I've ordered a fresnel lens (and I'm pretty sure it's going to be 5 1/2  x 5 3/4  Jon, there was some confusion, I told them to go ahead and ship it).

I will now go wrangle my icon and Jon, you go right ahead and offer any suggestion that seems pertinent.  I can always use reminders!

Still looking for brass door handles. . .

Hi Tara
Wow :o a workshop and two helpers I'm so so jealous

Re: the handles, Try searching for 'brass sash handle' and 'pull' in Google images and Froogle
The type I got are often listed as sash handles. The 'Liberty' handle isn't the correct one; it's just a cheap handle of the pull type

Here's a nice pair of Victorian brass pulls (both the same size) - they will send to the US

There are lots in UK online stores - I'm sure there must be some in the States. If not don't worry, I'll get you some.

Nice workshop!
The helpers a definite plus!

Shout if you need anything.

Technically, there are *three* helpers and we might have five. . .   :o

We haven't really publicised our build, but people are starting to pop up out of nowhere asking if they can come help.

I'm hoping to end up in a kinda Tom Sawyer position here.  'Of course you can help, just bring a sheet of plywood and a six pack.  I'll just sit here in front of the swamp cooler and direct.'  :)

That's called white hat syndome!  LOL.
What's up with the swamp cooler?   Did you find it in the swamp?  ;) :o

Enjoy your build!

Well, poor TimeGirl may have built under the coldest temps; I think we're going to set a record for building under the hottest temps.

It's been in the high 90s here and is about to crack 100.  :(

My Husband bought a giant swamp cooler a few years back for an outdoor event and I kinda absconded with it for my workshop when the outdoor events idea fell through.

It's a big monster fan with an internal grid that water runs down (you hook it up to a hose).  The evaporation cools the air coming out of the fan up to 20 degrees cooler than when it went in.

It doesn't work too well when the humidity soars, like it's been doing.  So we've mainly been using it as a big, giant fan.  When we hit 100, I'm hooking up the hose.

I gotta figure out what to feed the troops tomorrow.  First build was t-bone steaks (we raise our own beef, so it wasn't that expensive) and last week was chili.  I might make a BBQ run this week or may make Mexican food. . .  Today's tasks, figure out food, go look at door handles and buy beer.

I beg to differ  ;D

I built most of my TARDIS in our unheated garage last winter when it was like -30 out

I had to let go of the circular saw every few seconds because it was like holding ice

OK, so Tom gets 'coldest build'.  :)

Wish we could split the difference here.  :(

Went to Home Depot today.  No handles, no locks.

Hope to hit Lowes this weekend.  Hope to also build tomorrow.

I'll post pics as soon as I have them.

Neither place seems to stock handles that are quite like the ones on the TARDIS. I ended up using some drawer pulls for mine, which were from Lowes (I think - might have been Home Depot). They're not very authentic, but look OK, I think:

Both places stock a cheap brass night-latch (about $10), which worked for me... They come in one of those plastic packs that hangs on a hook. I found it in Home Depot amongst a lot of other very similarly packaged door parts on the bottom shelf.

You can get screen door handles from Menards.

No Meynards in Texas that I know of.

I have two more places to check, Lowes and then a bizarre specialty hardware store in Austin called Breed & Co.

I don't hold out much hope for Lowes, but Breed & Co. might have both handles and nightlatches.

Today, Matt forgot his big circular saw and so we decided to do a side and go back to the base next week.

So, we got a side done.

side1.jpg

Next week, we finish the base, start on the uprights and maybe hammer out another side!
