its not bad looking but unless there were gonna be issues with the height i would keep it similar  to the screen version. thats just me i like the oddity of the caps not extending the height of the step

That's the reason I'm modifying the design; making a shorter roof.  I could do it without the top caps having their own ledge; tried it that way first, but I thought the added detail improved it a touch.

Here it is without the added step, just with the top layer removed:

An acceptable trade-off if so!

A view of the two redesigns -- I think I like #3 best.

You should like 1 -- it's the original :)  And I agree with you on 3.

I've always been lead to believe the bumps face in, so they don't gather grime from the outside world. Mine face in, though I've often wondered whether they shouldn't face out. Sorry to confuse the issue!!

Hey, I just got that book from the library!
I didn't bother with glass, I just got sheets of fluorescent lighting plastic, but I've heard everyone here refer to it as pebbled glass, not hammered glass, which would be dented rather than...pebbles.  It depends on how picky you are ;)

Happily this sheet has the pebbles.   I'll have to cast up some replicas to make all 16 panes.
