So the wedding was successful (I am actually married), and the honeymoon was lots of fun (the two of us took over 1500 pictures in Italy and Malta), but unfortunately I can't go back to building my box quite yet.

Before the wedding, my father ripped out the studs and insulation from my basement, and while we were on honeymoon, he dug a few pits in my basement (to determine how deep the sewer pipe was).  This isn't a bad thing, as I really need to replace my basement floor (and install weeping tile inside), and now I can't put it off any more.  It does mean that I probably won't be able to do any work on my build until August though.

It is kind of fun breaking up the concrete floor with a sledge hammer ;D.  Most of my basement has a fairly thin layer of concrete (less than 1 inch / 2.5cm) so it's easy to break up... it'll be a lot less fun in the small area with thicker concrete. :P

<after searching around the Internet to find out where this place is> Nope.  Can't say that I even would have thought of going there.  The only place we really went to see in that region of Italy is Pompeii.

We didn't go to where they filmed Popeye (in Malta) either. ;)

Colin, congrats on the wedding and the honeymoon.
Sorry to hear about the delay in your build, but the basement sounds like a priority.
Sledge hammers are a lot of fun and therapeutic too! LOL! :)
Glad to see you made it back home safe during your travels with your wife.
Keep us posted on your basement progress, even though it won't be as cool as your Tardis build.

yes - congrats Colin! 1500 pictures - assuming it's a digital camera, your suitcase must have been full of memory cards!   :P

Anyway, sorry to hear your Tardis is on hold for a while - but better to rip out concrete than have a flooded basement!  ;)
I've just finished the last room in my house (the kitchen) which is partly why I've failed to notice just how long my Tardis build is taking..!
All the best with it - look forward to seeing more in august.

cheers
Chris

Hi Colin
Thanks for the encouragement on my outward opening doors. It backs the popular view that nothing is right or wrong as long as it's right for you, and that's got to be right.
Compared to some of the great stuff around here my little effort feels positively crude but hey I'm just gonna give it my best shot and hope Mrs KB likes the final thing has she has to live with it .
With many thanks

Hi Colin
Just a quick question, my son runs his own website www.redphonebox.info and wandered if he might use your valetta K6 pics on his English phone boxes abroad page. He always but always puts acknowledgements with pics sent to him. incidently I spent this afternoon sanding and priming his K6 roof instead of starting my wall panels.
Many thanks

No problem.  He can do whatever he wants with those pictures.

Whilst on that subject, here's one I snapped in downtown Seattle (not Ottawa), before I moved.

and yes of course he's welcome to use this one too (though please copy it, not link to it).

So it's still a long time before I'll be able to get back to my build, but that doesn't mean that nothing's happened...  I've another fresnel lens now:
2-Fresnels.jpg
I was a little concerned about the dome part of my first fresnel, wondering if I should try to cut it off, but now I don't have to.  Thankfully, both of these were acquired fairly cheaply off eBay, so I don't feel like I've lost anything.

For anyone who really wants to see what my basement looks like, here you go:

In the front, you can see the 14 buckets that I filled up with concrete after smashing up more of the floor today.

Dude,

Tardis building has to be much more fun than banging up concrete!
:)

Concrete smashing sounds like good strees relief!

Sorvan, I'd have thought the dome would have saved you making one. Just add a disk of wood and instant lamp top.

There's no question about that.  And smashing up concrete is much more fun than digging out the dirt under the concrete and hauling all the pails up the stairs and out into my back yard.  Unfortunately it has to be done.

The issue I had with the dome is that I'd be worried about it cracking.  If it was really cold outside (and trust me, it gets really cold outside - down to -40 some times, not including wind chill) and I left the light on, would the difference in temperature between the outside and whatever the bulb would generate inside be enough to crack the lens?  I've seen this happen before.  I'd rather have the heat be able to escape somehow than to test this out.
