With Peter Davison coming to a convention type thing in my city this weekend, this is my first ever opportunity to meet someone from WHO so I accepted an offer from the organisers to take some of my props to the show but lacking a car with towbar OR a trailer I couldn't take my TARDIS but I did have a cunning plan...

Way back when I built my last box (5 years ago!!??), I joined all of my corner posts to the side walls and made some very solid 1" MDF walls which have been threatening my life during construction ever since.

I thought I *could* try and pull the posts off the walls and set them up as just a front but it's probably destroy the MDF where the lgue had been, and then I'd need a new shorter base, the side signs would leave marks, they're still VERY heavy - so why not build some new (light) ones!?

I miscalculated in a few places, and the hardware store agreed to cut a sheet of MDF to size (no trailer remember) but they got some of the strips a little out...

but I got it all home a few days ago and over the pass few nights while trying to finish my NSD I've also been coming up with this:

Tomorrow is the deadline, events start Saturday 9am so I need to be there set up.   I still have some painting and weathering to do, some bolts to drill, a light to fit but I'm pretty happy right now.  Will take some pics once it's put together properly.

Cheers, Glen

That's a nifty solution to a problem, but one thing that does cross my mind is how when it's on display are you going to stop it from toppling over?  Are you going to weight the base or screw the whole thing down to something?

Please get a shot of Peter Davison stood next to it, you'd be mad not to of course.

Ah yes!  Am planning to put it across the corner of the booth I've been given plus hope to tie it with rope from the back of the top signs to an eye hook in the wall behind so that it can't topple forward.  Thought of that one (but waht will I have forgotten.. bound to be something)!

So, wait, uh ... you know how I'm usually a bit slow on the uptake ... so you're building just the front of the TARDIS then? Like a facade? That's cool. What are you using for the hardware and pebbled glass, etc, are you borrowing bits from your original build?

I went to the Melbourne leg of Davison's trip btw. Awesome!!

Ended up getting a truck loaned to take my full TARDIS along so the portal idea is saved for another time.   People seemed to love the display though, raised $500 for SPCA and some guests seemed drawn to it... (was actually used as backfrop to all formal pictures with Peter D and Mark Strickson)

Hey, look at that - the Fifth Doctor and your TARDIS!  I hope he liked it, they look great all standing there together.  That must have been a bit of a buzz!

Great stuff - and the Daleks too.  Is the NSD your build?

Hmm, where did I get to with this?   Met Peter D and Mark Strickson - both nice but professional.  Peter said nothing whatsoever about my TARDIS and three Daleks, Mark leaned casually on my NSD and nearly broke something but can't blame him for taking it's solid looks seriously.  Got them both to sign the roof of my 1:4 tardis which was nice.   There are also now hundreds if not thousands of picturs in the world of Peter Davison with my TARDIS posing with convention attendees so that gives it quite a bit of credibility I'd have thought.

ANYWAY... a year goes by and I decide to finish the front-of-a TARDIS because Paul McGann was a special guest at this year's convention thingy.   I was up til 1am the night before attaching doors and doing some painting beause they wanted a press call at 8:30 am.   I got it there and set up by 8am then of course they don't turn up until about 11. ::)  Met Paul and a nice guy he is too.  I couldn't attend the covnention this year but have since seen many pics of McGann with my front-of-a and I think it looks really good plus, disasembled, I can get the whole thing in my hatchback car in one go!  Have since loaned it to a friend with a sci-fi bookshop and am considering selling it to him at cost, but gave me lots of good ideas in how to build another light-weight box in the future.

Some pics:   Remember, this is just two posts, signbox, 2 doors and a thin (but full width) base.  It was secured to a concrete pillar behind in case of any risk of toppling forward. It is quite stable even with open doors when set up but I didn't trust people not to knock it over and kill children.  Wisely, it seems, as apparently as soon as the doors opened some girl *ran* up and launched herself at it, trying to hug the TARDIS, setting the whole thing rocking.  Whew, good thing for the safety line - don't trust the public!
