Well after trying to figure out what to do with my spare time in my flat, I decided to make a Life Size K9. Ive made two previous, one from an old box and a PG tips box, (Didn't look at all like him, built it when I was 11) and another one from Cardboard and paper mache, but this fell to bits. This time I looked at making him out of cardboard, and knew I could use it as I had a nice box of Mod Roc (Plaster of Paris Bandage) that after making the body and head out of cardboard I could then Mod Roc him to make it stronger.

I went out and bought a few things from Poundland (Love Poundland!) I bought a set of 10 battery operated red LED's, a plastic gun with sucker bullets and some tape. I then went to B&Q and picked up some cardboard boxes and bought some pipe insulation for £3.70. I then went to Wilkinsons and bought a telescopic rod, a can of silver spray and some Dulux tester pots. This cost about £10

So I got home and used the PDF plans from google and started to draw, cut out and stick him together. I had finally finished making the body and head and Mod Rocked him. I then sprayed him with the silver to realise it was too shiny, making him look like a kitchen fork! So I was glad I had the silver Dulux paint. Once I had painted him I realised that the head was wonky so I had to make a new one. I had a job to secure the neck as it didnt want to hold the weight of the head and nearly resorted to kicking it to pieces, but I persevered.

I created his Ears using a spot welder at college, plus cutting some acrylic for his eye panel and control panel and sanded a piece of dowel for his tail and I also was able to sweet talk a tutor to cut a piece of pipe for his neck. I also created a base with some castors on, which I screwed to the base and he now moves :). I used the silver spray once painted to create rust patches as well as coffee. All in all im happy with the finished product

For a cardboard version, that's pretty awesome. Great work!!!

BioDoctor900

Thanks, I've still got a few bits of tweaking to do, like his neck. Took him for a walk today and his head decided to fall down 5 minutes down the road. I need to also get some lights for his control panel or possible buttons. I need to paint his neck and skirting and get a rubber end for his tail.

My Mrk III K9 visited his older Mark II version today, here are some pics. There are a few differences between them, the Mrk II was made 20 Years ago!

Either that woman has Eskimo blood, or she's doing a darned good job of hiding the fact that she's freezing in those outdoor in-the-snow photos! As for that K-9... in most of those photos, if you didn't tell anyone he was made from cardboard, no one would know. He looks pretty solid in just about all of those photos. Nice job!

She's wearing the Season 18 scarf. I could be naked other than that and not even slightly feel the cold :D

Thanks for that imagery. :P
My eyes! My eyes! ;D

Marc, I can understand what you mean, considering where you live and probably grew up; but BioDoctor900 is in Surrey (southern UK). They don't usually get that sort of weather on a regular basis. In a few of those photos in the snow, that lovely woman (fantastic Sarah Jane!) is wearing what appears to be a light-weight shirt with the neck open, open-cuff three-quarter sleeves, and no scarf! (Eskimo blood, great actress with hiding how she feels the cold, both, or she's just far more resilient than I am!)

I used to live in Finland and grew up in the UK. I now live in Vienna. ;-)

Living in Finland has made me totally comfortable with being naked, however, my comment was directed primarily at the nature of Whovian scarves ;-)

Oh, I fully realize that... but the imagery you created in my mind... :o

So how about that cool K-9, eh?!

Haha, Wendy was actually quite cold when we took the snow pictures, but we were happy with the result of them, although the scarf is surprisingly warm, hence why she was wearing it :) I actually live in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, UK.

He is now officially finished, I just need to get a dog tag for him and he's done :D I painted his neck black, placed a metal rod through the neck to support it so that it wont fall down, secured his tail and made a collar with some fabric, cardboard and a glue gun. He also has a TARDIS Blue lead :D

Thanks for looking and the great comments

So it's been a while since I made Cardboard K9, and I'd always planned on using the cardboard version as a template for a proper wooden one. I'd never had the time nor money, but 5 years on, the times arrived where I've started making him out of MDF and Plywood

He's made using Lespacepie's plans, and he's slowly coming together

I need to make a new base for the body to sit on, I also need to sort out how I'm going to make his head, and I'm looking into electronics, like an Arduino for the control panel and possibly voice response, as well as getting an electric aerial, motorisation, gun, ears and tail....

Well I've been tinkering and doing what I can while I wait for a few parts to turn up from eBay...

IMG_20180422_205615.jpg

So in the mean time, I've made his ears and his name tag for his side panel..

Soldering the sieve mesh onto the copper wire wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, but I persevered, the washers and beads are superglued in place

IMG_20180423_175134.jpg

The stems that the ears slot into are large magnetic drawing pin heads, and the K & 9 were cut out of an old guitar pick plate that I had lying around

More soon, when stuff turns up

Well a few bits have turned up, still waiting on handles, and his tag. The fabric showed up for his collar, so I've made that...

IMG-20180425-WA0006.jpeg

I had to extend the removeable panel as id missed a section off, so I've added that...

IMG-20180426-WA0003.jpeg

IMG_20180426_203028.jpg

I've also added a bit more to the inside electronic panel...

1525440005002-135294527.jpg

And the Arduino also showed up, so I had a bit of a play, and managed to get this...

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Kff-Z1uTBoE

I had to drill holes in the bottoms of the buttons and add in the LEDs, despite the fact that most of the buttons had lights in, they run off 12v, so I would of had to have ordered as MOSFET to trick the bulbs into running at a lower voltage, but I couldn't be bothered with that as it would have made it even more complicated, and the some of the buttons do still function, so it's not all bad.

His antenna probe turned up (12v car aerial) I did test it, it extended, but then refused to retract....so I dunno, I'll look at that more when I've sorted out getting a fibreglass head

More soon
