Carshalton Box on High Street - Z1

Edit: This Box has two different positions on opposite sides of High Street. This initial Post covers the earlier location, with the later one being covered in a subsequent Post.

Original Box location, circa early to mid 1930's:

Apparently one of the earlier type Boxes was on the same site.

That's more of a Police Hut. ;)

Indeed, but they did make them with doors. It seems to have been a very common style/design for wooden Police Kiosks before the more substantial designs of the late 20's and early 30s in various locales.

Final Box location:

Some time after the initial photo for this Topic was taken this Box was moved from its old location on the South side of High Street to the North side and about 20 yards to the East. Note that this last position is the one specified in the Met List.

Here is a photo of the Box in this new position --

Yes indeed - beautiful to see it in decent resolution. Photo is good enough to verify that it is the same Box (or at least exactly the same Type), just moved across the street. You can even see the remnants of the old sign below the Phone Door - partial outline and filled in screw holes!

Was that an intentional shot or just a coincidence, KB?

Oh, very, very intentional Bill. I used to pass this box early Saturday morning, when I was helping ol' Granddad on the milk round. I went there a couple of years ago and dug out the Mark 1 and "Hut" pictures from the library :)

Very cool  8)

You don't happen to have a better resolution copy of that Mark 1 pic do you?

chriskingbees

Sadly not. It's just a scan of an old postcard :(
