The Box in Epping Forest at the Robin Hood Roundabout - J38

Here opposite the Robin Hood Inn --

A blowup of the Box --

As others have noted elsewhere - looks more like the Northwest corner than the "Southeast" indicated in The List, but perhaps it was resited.

A 1945 aerial view (courtesy of Mark) - looks like there's just a suggestion of an object that's in the same position as the first picture (the whitish blob is about that position - wartime censoring?) --

Not terribly clear due to being in the shadows, but here's a photo from a bit later (circa early 1960s) showing this Box (just in front of the car on the left) and The Robin Hood across the road --

That's a proper color pic of the B&W photocopy.

That's awesome. In looking at it, it would appear the black and white one was either a bad scan or a photocopy to begin with.

Hmmm... I wonder if the seller posts to the US?

petewilson

I couldn't even see the box in the B&W Scan and I'm good at finding boxes (being Police or GPO Telephone!)  ;D
I would of thought for an extra charge the seller would post to the USA (only normal airmail being a postcard)

Oh, I know, but some Sellers are very reticent to send overseas even with additional funds - at least in my experience. Fortunately, this one has no problems with it - wish me luck  ;D

Found another photo of this Box and The Robin Hood - this time from 1962 --

EDIT: I'm wondering if I shouldn't rename this the "Robin Hood Roundabout Box" as it wasn't technically the only Epping Forest Box (just the one pretty much in the middle of the forest). Thoughts?

Dalekoracle

Beautiful photo! Nice find!
And yes, a rename of the box would work. :)

Hard to tell in black & white, but I'd say that first picture is the lightest shade of blue we've seen for a police box.  I may have to dig up some late Pertwee/early Baker era TARDIS photos and convert them to black & white.  They may be close to the shade this box is in the first picture.

New aerial photo found for this Box shows that it was at its northwest corner position by 1939.

From a test of new panchromatic glass plates, dated as from April 1939 --

So, if it ever was at the Met List's location of the southeast corner of the junction, it had to have been moved fairly early on.

Or someone was holding the map upside down  ;D
