Don't you just hate it when that happens? I've lost a few treasured computer creations in my time.
It's hard to keep up the energy to keep doing backups just for yourself, until a hard drive fails or an accident happens.

I hope that after a decent pause you'll get motivated to build it again - this was looking good!

How badly has the drive failed? Does it still work, bar the missing files?

If it was not your system drive (i.e. that you have reinstalled over the top of it all) then I suggest you download Ubuntu and burn a Live Disk. You can use testdisk to scan the drive for the old contents and see if it can be recovered. If not, you've lost nothing for trying. I've done this a few times myself (and it's saved my ass every time!)
