It's an honest mistake, especially if you've seen the badly thrown together publicity TARDIS prop, with 1st Doctor companion Dodo, as posted by Doctorwho8 here: http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=212.0 (The post and photo is about 2/3 down the page. The front is part of the real prop; the side is the bit thrown together for the publicity shot.)
